Consolation win at Stowmarket festival
Lapses and bad luck cost Colts
The Stowmarket Colts Festival was held on the most perfect of mornings but sadly SW Colts didn't have the most perfect run of results. With 13 teams competing in two pools the boys had to contend with Ipswich YM, Chelmsford, Sudbury and Mavericks in their pool, playing matches of 15 minutes duration
Despite most of the possession against YM we managed to contrive a defeat of 5-14 thanks to a lapse of tackling concentration, even though we scored first and looked in control. The second match versus Chelmsford was drawn 5-5 though our 'try' in the final minute was deemed to have been held up. Against Sudbury we failed to convert our try and Sudbury converted theirs, giving them the upper hand at 5-7. Our final pool match against Mavericks saw us defend superbly for the first five minutes, then put the opposition under pressure, only for a clearing kick to bounce kindly for the Mavericks wing while Walden players looked on and they duly scored right on full time.
Our reward for the morning's effort was a playoff final to determine 9th and 10th finishes. This was against Colchester and for one reason or another, we finally seemed to have got the hang of these short duration games, with energy and inventiveness being shown from the off. Two converted tries saw Walden take a 14-0 lead, though Colchester scored late on to make it 14-5.
On reflection a frustrating day but we did welcome several U16s into our ranks, all of whom did themselves proud. We look forward to seeing more of them in the season.
