Colts come up short against Colchester
Cup game sees narrow defeat for Walden
This match will be remembered as the one that got away, where we were the architects of our downfall. Not that we played badly but as team we failed to press home the advantage when we had it. To their credit Colchester proved worthy opponents and to the neutral it was a compelling match with plenty of ebb and flow. However, we will rue not taking the opportunities when they were presented, most notably in periods of sustained pressure in both halves when we should have scored but failed to do so.
The hosts started slowly and paid the price for a lack of aggression and speed in defence when the visitors went over for a try within five minutes, creating an overlap to score in the left hand corner. The rest of the half saw Walden camped in Colchester territory but unable to unlock the defence, Colchester's tackling being both courageous and effective. We were probably guilty of not getting the ball wide enough, preferring to play around the fringes but lacking a cutting edge.
A frank team talk at the break seemed to galvanise the players and early in the half Ollie Ford made a lovely break, drew the full back and slipped an inside pass to Ollie Newman who sprinted in from 30 metres. Conversion was good. 7-5.
More pressure ensued with the forwards working well to retain possession while making ground. With the Colchester defence sucked in, the ball came out left and prop Will Stockle showed some gas to cross the whitewash from 15 metres out. 12-5.
Instead of using this as a platform to go on and win, Walden lost their shape a bit and allowed Colchester to reply soon after to level the scores. 12-12. Things got worse when Joe Saych was carded for repeated Walden infringements, giving the visitors a numerical advantage. An overlap on the right let in their winger to score and return the lead to Colchester. Despite a big effort from the lads including a 30 metre rolling maul ending just short of their line, Walden couldn't quite force a score. We had the opportunities but on the day it wasn't to be.
Well played to Colchester who put in a good shift and made good use of the possession they had, getting it out wide ad causing us problems. However, we look forward to playing you again soon.
