A fitting end
Final home game of the season against Barnsley.
For the second time this season Barnsley travelled to Sandal due to a late cancellation to ensure we got a game for which I would like to thank them. We will definitely arrange fixtures for next season.
As for the game - It wasn’t until I got home that I realised our usual match reporter was having a weekend break at the Betty Ford clinic in preparation for next weekend’s tour. So it wasn’t until I got home that I realised I didn’t even know the score which is not unusual for me - I have never known a score until I get that week’s match report.
But who cares! It’s the performance that was important and both teams gave everything to give all the spectators an excellent mornings Rugby. Sandal had to work hard as Barnsley have clearly continued to improve this season.
With Sandal having 21 players unavailable this week it was pleasing that we could still call upon a squad of 21 for this game. This included Matthew Hughes who made his debut for the team on the last game of the season (other than tour) but we hope to see more of him from September. The forwards were outstanding against a strong Barnsley pack. The front row scrummaged well the whole game and supported around the park, Oliver Kemp had a big game and made several strong tackles against a very good Barnsley 8, he ran well with the ball which resulted in 2 tries and Josh Reynolds had his best game of the season hitting the ruck well, making some big tackles and scoring a couple of tries to cap of a strong performance.
The backs ran the ball with intent and supported each other throughout the game. Cooky controlled the game from 9 with some excellent distribution and a typical cheeky scrum half try, Same Edge had a great game at inside centre making some great gains in to Barnsley territory and showing previously unseen speed!!!! (only joking Sam), Harry Feeney finished off every chance he got using his pace and evasion skills.
Overall a superb game played by both teams.
