Here we are - the last fixture of the season.
It has been a long old journey this year, with many highs as well as some disappointing lows, however it can be described as a time of character building and gaining of experience. For a relatively young side in parts of the team, especially in the back line at points of the season. Nevertheless it will be still marked as an underachievement, with a side packed full of talent that should be perhaps challenging for promotion.
Last week out the Hurricanes were defeated 'away' to Ventnor RFC. Fair play to the boys from the South of the Island, who took their opportunities when they arose and also showed determination to taste victory at the final whistle. For Sandown at the least there were periods of dominance throughout the fixture, and with a ten point margin at one point, it was probably thought that we would go on to win from there.
Captain Sam Rees was in reflective mood following the Ventnor game.
'It is frustrating that we perhaps let this game slip away from us. At moments we looked in good shape, however the Ventnor boys stuck at it and played a full game as a team. We today were more individual at points.
The season has been a good one and we will attempt to finish it off with a victory against Fareham next weekend. We owe those lads a performance, and also ourselves.
Look forward to seeing everyone down at the Fairway on Saturday, it should be a good day, full of rugby and beer!'
This weekend the attention turns to visitors Fareham Heathens. It could be fair to say that the Heathens have perhaps had a similar amount of success this season as the Hurricanes, with Fareham just missing out on promotion last season, this year they have found themselves battling out in the middle of the league table.
The Hurricanes will be looking to sign of the season in style, and at the same time also avenge the narrow loss at the beginning of the season to the Heathens. On that day it was howling winds and side-ways rain, and a ten-nil loss for the Hurricanes. This Saturday it looks set to be bright sunshine and blue skies, and in turn hopefully a strong showing from the boys and a 'W' to sign off the 2016/17 season.
