The second XI tasted defeat in the league for the first time this season following a disappointing fielding display at fellow title challengers Warley.
The hosts won the toss and elected to field first, and openers Lewis Firth and George Hampshire made a watchful start in the early overs. The partnership had progressed to 56 until Firth was dismissed for 29 in the 19th over.
That brought Simon Wood to the crease, and he and Hampshire put on a further 28 before the former was adjudged lbw for 19 and had to walk. Charles Hyland, coming down from the first team, then joined Hampshire at the crease and the pair put on 26 before Hampshire was bowled just three runs shy of a half century.
Hyland and Matthew Scholefield then put on 20 before Hyland was bowled for 23, before Mick Wood and Scholefield added another 34 until the latter was the victim of another questionable lbw decision. In the final overs Wood added some quick runs with the help of Simon Scholefield and Matthew Keast as SBCI reached a reasonable score of 199 for 6. All the batsmen had got in and got starts before getting out again, which prevented the side from turning a good total into a match winning one.
Warley got their reply off to a good start, reaching 48 until Keast made the breakthrough in his first over. 48 for 1 became 65 for 2 as skipper Scholefield trapped Andrew Oates lbw for six, and two more wickets followed in consecutive overs as first Keast had Howard Cooper caught in the gully by Mick Wood before Scholefield took a caught and bowled chance. At this stage Warley were 72 for 4 and the visitors were on top.
But they could not maintain the pressure and the runs continued to flow as Warley fought their way back into the game. SBCI’s cause was not helped by some poor fielding which saw a number of chances go down to let their opponents off the hook.
Simon Hampshire and Scholefield Jnr did come on and take a wicket apiece, but Warley were well ahead of the eight ball by that point and they sealed their four wicket victory with seven overs to spare to bring an end to a disappointing day for Scholefield and his men.
