Rain denies Sunday team once again
The weather had the final say once again as for the second week running, rain denied the Sunday team what would surely have been another 20 point haul
Once again the Sunday side were left cursing the bad weather as their best bowling and fielding performance of the season went unrewarded.
With only ten men and with Elland fielding what looked a much stronger side than in the reverse fixture, things were not looking promising for the side. Things did not improve quickly either as once again skipper Harry West lost the toss and was asked to field in dewy conditions.
The father and son partnership of Bill and Ed Keighley opened the bowling, and Bill made an immediate breakthrough in his first over as he had Elland's opener well caught by Simon Wood stood up behind the stumps.
Bill's next over was even more successful as he claimed two more wickets - first bowling the other opener via an inside edge before removing the new man first ball with a full delivery that trapped him in front of middle stump. Unfortunately the hat trick ball was blocked out but at that stage Bill had figures of 2-2-0-3.
Next over it was Ed's turn to get in on the action as he enticed an edge from Elland's left hander and Wood did the rest behind the stumps with a regulation catch.
A change of bowling also brought immediate rewards as Andy Boocock's first ball was driven uppishly and West took a simple catch in the covers. At the other end, Will Thickett replaced Bill and he took a wicket in his second over as a flighted ball dipped late on the batsman and took the off stump. At that stage Elland were 32 for 6 and SBCI were in the hunt for a maximum points victory.
Boocock then removed Elland's only dangerous looking batsman as a lofted drive was casually taken by Paul Collins running back at mid off and claiming the catch above his head with consumate ease. And Collins was in the action again in the next over, fielding the ball at backward square leg and the firing the ball over the stumps for Wood to remove the bails leaving Elland's portly batsman miles short of his ground.
The end of the innings was in sight and the last two wickets fell quickly, Boocock claiming one via a well taken catch by John Scholefield in the gully, and Will taking the last as he bowled his man with the batsman looking to force off the back foot.
A superb bowling and fielding performance from the ten men, and the bacon sandwiches at the interval tasted sweet, especially given that there was both red and brown sauce on offer!
Unfortunately, the rain come just as openers West and Jon Hampshire were about to walk to the crease, and it never quite stopped for long enough to get back out onto the field. Both sides waited around but as the cut off point of 12.30 arrived with the rain still falling the match was abandoned leaving the men from The Astleys very frustrated as a definite 14 extra points slipped away.
