Skipper shows the way
Sunday Section captain Harry West showed the way with bat, ball and also in the field to lead the side to a 15 point haul and leave the title charge in our hands with one game to play.
After a damp morning and overcast skies at the start of the game, the sun finally broke through just around tea time to ensure that the game finished in glorious late summer sunshine. There were five changes to the side that only managed half a game against Elland a fortnight previous, with Paul Keighley, Dave Brown, Fahad, Callum Bowmer and Brad Holt coming into the side for those unavailable, including the holidaying Andrew Boocock and Paul Collins who was shopping for matching cushion covers and curtain tie-backs – the mind boggles Pedro.
A good toss to win and the opposition captain guessed incorrectly with Harry electing to bat first. With the skipper and Jon Hampshire opening the batting, the opening pair set about creating a strong base on which we could build a match winning total. They didn't let us down, putting on 72 for the first wicket. Against some decent opposition bowling and with the wicket bouncy at one end and keeping low at the other, scoring freely was never easy and it wasn't until the 13th over until we reached 50. Not a bad scoring rate, but somewhat slower when compared to other games this season. Jon was the first player to depart having creamed one to mid on, who looked more to be trying to get out of the way of the ball rather than catching it. Simon departed without troubling Harry in the scorebox, which brought Callum to the wicket, who picked up from where he left off before his holidays by sending the ball to the fence – with 22 of his 24 coming in boundaries. Harry, at the other end was happy in building a big score, but having reached 53 thanks in part, to two big sixes was caught out. This brought about a mini collapse with Callum departing for 24 after trying one big shot too many and then Brian Haigh for 2. We had the unfortunate habit of finding the fielder when the ball was hit in the air, and aside for accounting for the top four, Paul Keighley and Dave Brown also had their fate sealed in a similar manner. A twenty five run partnership between Paul Keighley and Brad Holt took the score onto 150 and another batting point, but aside from the 18 made by John Scholefield who was last man out, we felt we hadn't done ourselves justice and looked to have been 30-40 runs short of where we wanted to be.
In true SBCI style, a great performance with the ball and in the field ensured that Bradshaw never really go on top of the required run rate and would finish some 41 runs short of their target with the hosts, just one wicket away from taking maximum bowling points. Harry took the first wicket with the score on 26 and would go on to take another 3, returning impressive figures of 4 for 21 of his 10 overs. After a fifty run second wicket partnership, three wickets fell for just one run, getting us right back into the game with Brad Holt coming to the party and taking two of the wickets to fall. Brad would also end up with pretty impressive final figures of 3 for 25 off 8. Looking a little light on the bowling front and needing to find some overs from somewhere, Brian Haigh stepped forward and bowled seven impressive overs for 15 and taking a wicket in the process. The shrewd and economical bowling, combined with some great fielding, including a run out meant that the opposition only reached three figures with nine overs left meaning that they were never really going to threaten our total. A wicket from Harry in his final over left us with 10 deliveries to dislodge one of the final pair. As hard as we tried the final pair stood firm, who seemed more keen on not losing the final wicket rather than trying to get the six runs required for a further batting point.
So we end our home campaign with a 15 point haul, and combined with the other results, we stay top of the league with our final league game of the season at Southowram to come. A maximum point return will see us promoted to the Sunday 1st division as champions.
Fielding mark:- Shared between Will Thickett and Dave Brown.
