Grimsby travelled to Heslam Park for the return match of this season. Although they struggled to find enough players on the last occasion the two teams met, Grimsby brought a full squad this time.
The initial few minutes of the first game suggested that the visitors were going to give the Greens a good run out. It was only a matter of time though before the home side were on the score board with a fine run from Matty Boden. Thereafter, although it was never a walkover, the tries kept on coming with Matty Boden again scoring as did Tom Cowling
, Ross Clapton, Henry Foster (x2) and Archie Swain. All were converted by Matthew Dalton (2), george taylor
and Henry Foster (4).
The final score was 49 to nil.
With the first match under the belt the opportunity was taken to put into practice some of the moves from training. For the forwards new lineout calls were given an airing and the backs were encouraged to throw the ball around even more, support the runner and hopefully get the ball out to the wing – never a strong point in any match.
The result was five tries from the backs two of which were from Jack Gregory on the wing and some much improved support running that gave Oliver Bevington and Matthew Dalton tries. Ross Clapton nicked another try with a typically strong run and Ryan Scutt pinched another with one of his trade mark dashes from a maul close to the opposition line. george taylor
finished the day with a run from deep in his own half to score. The conversions were taken by Matthew Dalton (2), Morgan Turner and george taylor
to give a final score of 43 to nil.
Man of the match went to Josh Sarsfield for his concentration and determination at all phases of play. Special mention went to Jack Gregory for his patience out on the wing, his eventual running to score two tries and his neat placing of the ball when he had been tackled.
