Scunthorpe travelled to Dinnington for the annual tournament and having lost to Dinnington 4 out of 6 games in the season and the other side Dronfield being named as the best Dinnington had faced this season a tough day was expected.
For a change mother nature was with the tournament and having spent the last three tournaments in every weather condition barring sun, she finally made an appearance making a glorious afternoon for rugby.
Game 1 Scunthorpe vs Dinnington A
After a good warm up Scunthorpe were ready and looking lively for the game ahead and as they won the toss they were soon off and running, Alfie Taylor showing a good burst and step through the gap to open the scoring, Dinnington were obviously a quality side and were recycling the ball well, passing well before a tag on some occasions. Scunthorpe however, were undeterred and William Horner was showing his defensive qualities as well as his attack.
Scunthorpe found they could force themselves upon the game and the errors began to creep into the Dinnington passing, Alfie Oldridge was next to score sprinting down the wing, Daniel Longden was next seizing on a loose ball he managed to arc his run round the defence to score.
Dinnington managed to get themselves on the score sheet but Scunthorpe were rampant with Harry Robinson swivelling his hips to go through asmall gap and evade tacklers to score. Daniel Longden added Scunthorpe's fifth at half time and Scunthorpe were flying. score 5-1
Scunthorpe seemed to switch off in the second half as whatever the Dinnington coach had said at half time obviously worked hitting back with good defence and scoring two quick fire tries to get themselves back into the game. A good bullocking run from Charley Wilkinson set up Lewis Talbot to run round the outside of the defence to score.
Dinnington sensing an unlikely comeback was on, upped their game again scoring another two unanswered tries and the game was most definitely on.
However, Longden was on hand to secure his hat-trick and with time running out the score should of been enough, Dinnington however, came back at Scunthorpe scoring but time was against them and Scunthorpe from a 5-1 lead held on to record a win 7-6.
Game 2 Scunthorpe vs Dinnington B
Scunthorpe faced Dinnington's other team in the tournament and although they were called the B side there was nothing 2nd about them.
Scunthorpe were again off and running first with a good score in the corner from Chris Green, Fantastic efforts in defence from Alfie Taylor and George Atkinson meant that Scunthorpe were turning the ball over before Dinnington could cross the whitewash.
However, Scunthorpe were committing unforced errors and Dinnington exploited this to score and level the game.
Scunthorpe had also developed a trait of running to the touchline before trying to make ground up the wing, and on a few occasions Scunthorpe drifted into touch. Harry Robinson listened to the advice and took the ball up the middle going through the defence to score leaving the half time 2-1 to Scunthorpe.
The second half was a mixed bag of fortune as first Alfie Taylor seemed to go clean through only to upended on his way to the try line to his credit he held onto the ball as hit the floor, the referee however, turned the ball over and gave Dinnington the opportunity to level the scores.
Scunthorpe then had a period of pressure as William Horner on the line managed to ground the ball but the try was not given and the ball was turned over despite there being only 4 tags gone.
Scunthorpe continued to defend after they seemed to concede a high number of infringements which gave Dinnington the opportunity to get into the Scunthorpe half, Scunthorpe's goal line defence held firm and it was Alfie Oldridge who sprinted the full length of the field to score.
Horner again was unlucky as he neared the try line he appeared to be pushed and unable to hold onto the ball spilled it forward the referee chose to penalise the knock on and the ball was back to Dinnington.
Dinnington needed no second chances as they levelled the scores. Scunthorpe however were left to rue chances where they had gone into touch whilst in the clear, on the other hand were bouyed by their defence and discipline. Final score ended 3-3.
Game 3 Scunthorpe vs Dronfield
Scunthorpe faced new opposition in Dronfield and again looked like they had scored first through Alfie Oldridge only to be adjudged to have not grounded the ball correctly. He soon made up for this however sprinting down the other wing to score. Oldridge was in good mood for scoring and went through to again soon after. Dronfield managed to pull one back on the stroke of half time. 2-1 the score.
Following half time Dronfield levelled the scores. Scunthorpe's overseas player Luckasz took the ball up the wing just being tagged short he passed to Talbot who scored an easy try.
Dronfield however again hit back to level, but Alfie Taylor seemed to have won it for the greens as he went over after exploiting a gap in the defence.
Dronfield had one last attempt to level the scores which they did although Alfie Taylor appeared to have taken the players tag 5 yards before the line the player was allowed to move forward and ground the ball as the ball spilled forward the referee checked with the linesman who confirmed the tag had been taken, the referee made the decision to give benefit of the doubt and awarded the score blowing for full time and the score was 4-4.
Scunthorpe had qualified for the final finishing second winning 1 and drawing 2, they were to play Dinnington B in the final a side they have drawn with already.
Final Scunthorpe vs Dinnington B
Scunthorpe were ready for their final game of the season against one of the better sides they had faced all day, feeling confident and with top try scorer Alfie Taylor taking the ball on he opened the scoring.
Good defence meant that Dinnington were working harder for their tries than Scunthorpe were, although Dinno levelled Daniel Longden ran the ball through the middle to restore Scunthorpe's lead. Again though Dinnington came back on the 5th tackle they scored.
Lewis Talbot showed great pace to score on the stroke of half time leaving the score 3-2.
With Dinnington having the ball it would normally be that they would score but Scunthorpe's defence were immense and pushing them back meant turnover ball and again Talbot out sprinted the defence to score.
Dinnington did manage to pull a score back, before Daniel Longden scored with a great trademark step to wrong foot the defence.
Dinnington again traded tries with Scunthorpe but this proved to be their last as Scunthorpe defence grew stronger and were forcing mistakes in the Dinnington ranks, Jake Kreamer had a good run down the middle before he offloaded to Oldridge who had to run the ball in to score. Alfie Taylor who started the days scoring ended the same after a turnover ball, he managed to go through a gap to leave the score 7-4 in Scunthorpe's favour and leave Scunthorpe DINNINGTON TOURNAMENT WINNERS!

A fantastic season gone by with every player putting in performances and effort throughout. Scunthorpe can say they have remained undefeated in tournaments a total of 24 games. As they wish Charlie and Gary well for next year the under 7's will look forward to being next years under 8's.
