Scunthorpe 4th XV 17 - 50 Doncaster Phoenix XV
Due to a late fixture cancellation Scunthorpe 4ths were away to Doncaster Phoenix 2nds in what was to prove a difficult game against opposition a number of divisions higher. Doncaster set the tone of the game from the warm up with cones and tackle bags being employed to the amazement of the travelling side. From the kick off the Doncaster game plan was evident as the ball went out to the powerful quick backs resulting their first try within the first 10 minutes. A depleted Scunthorpe side missing key players struggled to keep up with the early pace allowing Doncaster to cut through the centres scoring a 2nd try soon after. From the restart Scunthorpe rallied to put pressure in the opposition half resulting in an infringement giving away a penalty which was converted by captain Tim Foster
from in front of the posts. Doncaster replied adding a further two tries with the same powerful running game before the Scunthorpe forwards earned another penalty. Opting for the lineout instead of taking the easy penalty 3 points the forwards secured the ball and with a rolling maul worked their way towards Doncasters try line. Eventually the ball was passed out to the backs and after some neat work scrum half Henry Brewster went on to score under the posts with Foster adding the conversion. By half time Doncaster added further to the score to make it 31-10 going into the close.
The second half started well with Scunthorpe putting their opposition under pressure but they were unable to capitalize on the increased ball possession. The Doncaster backs found it more difficult to break down the Scunthorpe defense but eventually managed to break through to score in the corner. Scunthorpe’s never say die attitude and hard forward counter rucking recovered the kick off and worked their way to the Doncaster 22 metre line. With the forwards work done it was the turn of the backs to create an overlap for centre Rob White
to race past the flat footed Doncaster defense, the conversion being added by Foster. After a spirited display the pace of the game started to tell on Scunthorpe allowing Doncaster two more tries before the final whistle. Although the scoreline doesn't reflect it the whole Scunthorpe team performed outstandingly well against a well drilled opposition team. Next week sees a return to merit league action playing away against Beverley 3rd XV.
