Stags move to next round of Merit Championship cup

Good performance by forwards and backs Jake Goodison passes 100 points in all competitions

Scunthorpe RUFC Stags entertained Bradford and Bingley in the second round of the Yorkshire Merit Championship cup on Sat 10/11/18. A 2 minutes silence was observed before the game commenced with Scunthorpe immediately on the attack after regaining the kick off and following a good run by Tim Dunk a ruck was formed a short distance from the try line and Will Harrison scored the first try of the game after only 2 minutes, Jake Goodison converting. Scunthorpe showed that not only were they dominant in the scrum but the backs also had pace and that they could attack from anywhere on the field. After only another 5 minutes Harrison broke the defence and scored his second of the the day , Goodison again converting. Scunthorpe’s attacking pattern disappeared and they began to miss tackles which allowed Bradford and Bingley to counter attack using their pacey backs and they scored their first try of the day. During the attempted conversion kick the Scunthorpe players gathered together and captain Kane Linklater read the riot act. From the kick off Scunthorpe attacked again with intensity and purpose Jake Barrett spotted a large hole developing in the defensive line and dashed through to score under the post giving Goodison an easy conversion kick. Bradford and Bingley had no answer to the attacking lines of Scunthorpe and further tries by Matthew Mason and 2 by Eddie Newsum meant that at half time Scunthorpe were leading 42 – 5.
The second half started with Scunthorpe looking disjointed in the first few minutes but they soon got into their stride with tries from Matty Field, Tim Dunk, Ben Botham with Newsum completing his hat trick. The game prematurely finished once Scunthorpe passed the 60 point mark following an agreement with the Bradford and Bingley captain and the referee, the final score being Scunthorpe 64 Bradford and Bingley 5.
