Scunthorpe Stags 48 Huddersfield 2nds 24

Great team performance including 3 tries by players aged under 19

Scunthorpe Stags hosted Huddersfield 2nds on a cold and blustery October day, like Scunthorpe Huddersfield fielded a team comprising of youngsters and experienced players. There was a change to the line up of the Scunthorpe team with Jake Barrett going into the 10 slot and a debut start for youngster Ben Botham, with the even younger Jack Brunt on the bench. Huddersfield kicked the game off and Scunthorpe retained the ball through a series of pick a go’s to gain good territory before releasing the pacey backs who passed the ball from one side of the field to the other before Jake Goodison touched down to get Scunthorpe’s first try of the day , Goodison was unsuccessful with the conversion. Huddersfield worked their way into the Scunthorpe half and after a penalty at a scrum they went for the points and reduced the deficit to 2 points. From the kick off Scunthorpe aggressively chased the ball and Matthew Field got the ball to Oliver Fielding who in turn found David Ward who found himself in space and made good progress towards the try line, he eventually passed to the supporting George Mason who thundered over the line, Goodison was this time successful with the conversion. Scunthorpe were beginning to play confidently and unlike the previous game were protecting the ball and were aggressive at the breakdown. Scunthorpe had a lineout within the opposition 22 and after a trademark catch and drive Matthew Mason was at the back of the drive to touch down for Scunthorpe’s 3rd try of the day. Scunthorpe had to re-shuffle the line up after Barrett had to leave the field after sustaining an eye injury. Scunthorpe’s 4 th try was achieved through some quick thinking by Will Harrison who broke through the defence to score, Goodison being successful in adding the extra’s. With only minutes to go to half time Huddersfield piled on the pressure and scored a good try which was successfully converted, the first half finished with a score of Scunthorpe 24 Huddersfield 10.
The second half began with Huddersfield attacking the Scunthorpe try line and after some good defence by Scunthorpe they broke through and scored the first try of the second half , with the conversion being successful the score was Scunthorpe 24 Huddersfield 17. Huddersfield were beginning to put phase after phase together and were looking the better of the two teams, but after an injury to one of their props they had to go to uncontested scrums which in line with a new law meant they had to go down to 14 men for the rest of the game. This seemed to re-invigorate the Scunthorpe team and they now went on the attack. Scunthorpe were now within the opposition 22 and Clark Murray got the ball and despite valiant attempts by the Huddersfield players he shrugged tacklers off and touched down, Goodison added the extra’s. Stand in coach Billy Hardy then gave Jack Brunt his first introduction to senior rugby and Brunt showed his pace and attacking abilities by scoring after only minutes of him being on the pitch, Goodison again being successful with the extra’s. With Huddersfield being a man down Scunthorpe now started to find space on the wings and after a line out the ball was switched from one side of the field to the other to give Ben Botham the opportunity to score his first senior try. At a lineout on the Huddersfield 5 metre line the ball was not cleanly caught and bounced into the hands of Bram Hollingsworth who dove over the line to score. In the space of 10 minutes Scunthorpe had scored 3 tries all by players under the age of 19 and had effectively killed the game. As in the last minutes of the first half Huddersfield began to attack and gain ground and managed to get a try which was converted to give the final score Scunthorpe 48 Huddersfield 24.
In what was a physical game the Scunthorpe players must be pleased with their performance and continuing improvement from one game to the next.
