Stormers V Old Brods

An Eventful Game

Scunthorpe RUFC U14s (Stormers) V Old Brods U14s
Away Game 10/9/17
Final Score SRUFC U14s 17 – Old Brods U14s 57

The Stormers went over to Old Brods prepared for any eventuality with the weather, but despite grey skies the day was warm and the rain held off for an eventful game.

Scunthorpe started strong from the first kick of the game and chased the ball with Craze, Stevens, Osborn, Toyne and Hall tackling the Old Brods players and not allowing them to make any ground but despite the best efforts of the team Old Brods made a break and ran in the first try of the game. Scunthorpes kick to restart the game once again didn’t make much ground with plenty of tackles once again slowing the Old Brods down, when they broke through and looked set to make ground Christer and Parkin chased them down landing superb tackles, Old Brods passed across the pitch but Craze intercepted a pass and with fast legs on him ran over half the length of the pitch before being caught and tackled, Old Brods regained possession but before long a scrum was awarded to Scunthorpe from which Old Brods stole the ball before dropping it and Parkin scooped it up and protected the ball. It wasn’t long before Old Brods stole the ball again and quickly passed out to their speedy wing who ran in a try. Before you could blink Old Brods then ran in another try. The Stormers kept their heads at the restart catching the ball and passing between players to make ground until Old Brods made a high tackle which allowed Osborn to fight his way through the opposition to score a try, with Conroy kicking the conversion over. The intensity of the game continued but Old Brods dominated and scored a further 4 tries.

Half Time Score SRUFC 7- Old Brods 47

Scunthorpe came out for the second half like a different team. Old Brods kick was caught by Conroy who kicked and chased the ball, a penalty was awarded to Scunthorpe who took the opportunity to make some ground and kicked to touch. K Barrett threw the ball into the line-out to Lythgoe who took the ball into play. Old Brods stole the ball back but a tackle by Christer saw them bundled into touch. Once again K Barrett threw the ball into the lineout with Old Brods too quick off the mark they were penalised with the resulting kick again going to touch. This time with something to prove Old Brods stole the loose ball and with both teams playing well managed to take it over for a try. Scunthorpe restarted play with a kick that was caught by Old Brods but good defensive and then attacking play by Parkin and Stevens resulted in ground being made and then a high tackle by Old Brods allowed the Stormers to gain ground with another long kick to touch. What happened next was exactly as they had practised in training, the lineout throw by K Barrett was caught by Lythgoe who protected the ball and turned passing to Osborn who burst through to score a try. Old Brods soon replied with a try of their own. Scunthorpe were determined to fight back and not let Old Brods score anymore. Old Brods caught the kick but Conroy was in with a tackle and stole the ball passing over to Parkin on the wing who was tackled into touch. The Old Brods took the lineout but Hall had fire in his heels and was in with a quick tackle and Old Brods losing the ball. A scrum awarded to Scunthorpe saw the power of the Forwards come in to play allowing Horwell as scrum-half to come round and pick up the ball, passing to K Barrett who forced through before being tackled, Scunthorpe players came in to protect and retrieve the ball much to Old Brods annoyance. Play was stopped and an Old Brods player sent off, but the Stormers also lost K Barrett through injury. The Stormers had fire in their bellies and a determination to get the ball over the line and play resumed, the team pulled together and dug deep to dominate the last play until Craze managed to get the ball over the try line.
