With the sun shining down Scunthorpe played their first game of the season at Heslam Park starting with a nail biting first half.

Scunthorpe started the game with a kick that went into touch allowing a lineout to Doncaster but quick tackling saw a knock on and a scrum awarded to Scunthorpe. Ingram passed the ball over to Bradwell who fought his way forward through the Doncaster players before passing over to Craze who made ground towards the try line before a knock on saw a scrum being awarded to Doncaster but the power of the Scunthorpe forwards saw Scunthorpe push over the ball and gain possession it was passed to Barratt who continued to make ground through the Doncaster defence, when he was taken to the ground the Stormers showed incredible teamwork to protect the ball ensuring that they retained possession before the ball found the hands of Craze who pushed through to score a try, with the conversion also being scored. From the kick play continued with Doncaster in possession of the ball solid tackles by Conroy and Ingram ensured that they failed to make much of their possession of the ball, Scunthorpe were awarded a penalty and took a quick tap and go with Conroy passing out to Craze in a pass that Doncaster intercepted running in their first try of the game. Scunthorpe’s kick was caught by Doncaster who decided to kick the ball back which was cleanly caught by Horwell who made ground before being tackled, Hall came over to protect the ball before some solid team play saw the ball pass from Bradwell to Barrett and Conroy whose kick bounced into touch. With Doncaster in possession the Stormers were determined not to let them gain ground and fierce defensive work by Osborn, Craze and Conroy ensured that Doncaster were on the back foot. The ball was kicked and chased by Murray then knocked on by Doncaster. A scrum was awarded to Scunthorpe which saw the Forwards push over the ball allowing Osborn at No8 to pick up the ball, spot the gap on the blindside and score a try. Doncasters kick was caught cleanly by Horwell who ran forward before being taken out by a tackle, once again the ball was protected by good team work and the Stormers continued to make ground a scrum and a lineout followed allowing the forwards to dominate the play before Conroy passed out to Murray then Craze who took the ball safely over for another try which was converted. Doncasters kick went too long over the deadball line and the resulting scrum once again saw the power of the Scunthorpe forwards pushing over the ball allowing Ingram to pick up the ball and pass to Conroy for a while neither team dominated with the teams passing across the pitch until a solid tackle by Osborn allowed Conroy to steal the ball only for Doncaster to steal it back. From a lineout Hall was in quickly to interrupt the Doncaster players flow some superb tackling followed allowing Lythgoe to steal the ball. Play continued and from a scrum Doncaster stole the ball and ran in the final try of the first half.

Doncasters kick was caught by Murray before being stolen by Doncaster who kicked the ball into touch from the lineout Doncaster kept knocking the ball backwards and eventually a scrum was awarded from which Doncaster picked up the ball and started to make ground tackles by Conroy, Lythgoe and Stevens saw the progress of Doncaster slowed and a scrum awarded to Scunthorpe the ball come out and Conroy kick to touch, the resulting lineout saw Hall come in to quickly and penalised. It wasn’t long before the ball was kicked into touch by Doncaster and Scunthorpes practise in the lineouts came into play with Barrett throwing to Lythgoe who popped the ball to Craze and then to Toyne. Horwells kick was beautiful but pulled back into play by Doncater who took full advantage passing across the pitch to score a try which was quickly followed by another. Scunthorpes kick was caught by Doncaster who were quickly tackled by Lythgoe and Stevens, from a lineout Doncaster had possession before dropping the ball when tackled by Osborn, Lythgoe cleared the ball out allowing Conroy to pick up. Doncaster won a scrum and ran down the wing only to find themselves being bundled into touch by a tackle by Osborn. The Lineout saw Barrett throw the ball in and the team coming together to drive the ball forward. Doncaster once again stole possession and ran in 2 tries. The Stormers refused to roll over and give up and continued to play on with superb tackles from Osborn, quick thinking by Horwell, Stevens and Toyne and Craze taking the ball forward before an error saw Doncaster pick up the ball and pass out to their wing who ran in the final try of the game despite chases by Hall, Stevens and Murray.
