The Stormers took the trip over to Sheffield to play on a smaller pitch than usual, for a Mother’s Day treat.
Scunthorpes kick was caught by Sheffield but Lythgoe, Ingram and Osborn were in quickly with tackles stealing the ball back and passing over to Stevens who was tackled allowing Sheffield to regain possession briefly before stealing it back, with a penalty awarded to Scunthorpe they used the kick to touch to gain ground and Barratts lineout throw found the hands of Hall who popped the ball to Osborn who ran down the blindside to score his first try of the game. Sheffields kick was caught by Lythgoe who passed to Craze as he was tackled the ball then went through the hands of Conroy, Ingram back to Conroy and then Stevens before an infringement by Sheffield saw Scunthorpe awarded a penalty who again kicked to touch Barratts throw again found the hands of Hall then Horwell who passed the ball across, from a maul Osborn took the ball out. A scrum saw Sheffield take the ball out but tackles by Parkin and Osborn as they went over the try line saw the try held up, Sheffield hadn’t finished and from the scrum passed the ball out dodging the tackles of the Stormers managed to get the ball over the try line. Scunthorpes kick was cleanly caught by Sheffield but tackles by Ingram, Hall and Conroy pressurised Sheffield into knocking the ball on and from the Scrum Osborn picked up the ball and run forward before being stopped by a tackle, a series of rucks followed before the ball came out still in the Stormers possession going through the hands of Conroy, Osborn and Morrell who was tackled Hall came into the ruck and Horwell collected the ball passing it through the hands of Conroy, Morrell, Osborn, Horwell and Craze before a penalty was awarded to Scunthorpe who took a tap and go passing the ball over to Barratt who fought his way towards the try line only to be stopped short. From a scrum Sheffield regained possession and ran the ball forward before being stopped by an Earth trembling tackle by Osborn and a follow up tackle by Ingram. With a penalty awarded to Sheffield they kicked to touch but the forwards piled on the pressure in the maul that followed ensuring that when the ball came out loose that they picked it up and kicked for ground with Morell and Murray hot on its heels it made it over the try line but Sheffield grounded the ball first. From the scrum Horwell took the ball out passing to Conroy then through the hands of Murray, back to Horwell and then Osborn who made it over the try line to score with the extras coming from the boot of Horwell. Sheffields kick was caught by Stevens who passed over to Osborn, Sheffield stole the ball back tackles from Morrell, Osborn and Christer ensured that they couldn’t make much of it, Sheffield took the ball into touch. Barratts throw in the lineout was caught by Hall who popped it back to Horwell then to Conroy who kicked, with Sheffield in possession the pressure was kept up by Scunthorpe with tackles from Lythgoe, Conroy and Warburton. With a penalty awarded to Sheffield they kicked to touch and from the lineout forced their way through the Stormers defence to score a try.
Half – time Scunthorpe 12 – Sheffield 14
The second half started with Sheffield’s kick being caught by Lythgoe and Sheffield stealing the ball back in a ruck but knocking the ball on the following scrum rotated and a penalty was awarded to Sheffield who kicked to touch. The Stormers piled on the pressure and the ball was lost to touch, from the lineout Barratts throw was cleanly caught by Hall and passed through the hands of Horwell, Craze, Morrell, Ingram, Stevens and finally to Murray before he was tackled, from the ruck Conroy took the ball on before being tackled popping the ball to Stevens and then Barratt, Sheffield briefly regained possession but they opted to kick and the ball was caught by Lythgoe. With a penalty awarded to the Stormers they took advantage and kicked to touch, the lineout ball was cleanly thrown in by Barratt and caught by Hall who in a well-practised manoeuvre once again passed the ball to Horwell the ball went to Conroy and then Stevens who was tackled and the ball went loose but Parkin was on hand to pick it up. A penalty awarded to Scunthorpe saw a replay of the previous lineout, and play continued from a scrum awarded to Scunthorpe Osborn once again took the ball out and ran in a try with the extra points coming from Conroys conversion. Sheffield’s kick was this time caught by Conroy who kicked for ground with Ingram and Barratt tackling the Sheffield catcher, from the maul the ball found Parkin who passed to Morrell Sheffield stole the ball before tackles form Conroy and Stevens saw a knock on, Sheffield won the ball from the scrum but only for a short while as tackles from Conroy and Stevens allowed Lythgoe to steal the ball back and pass to Osborn who was tackled and from the ruck the ball went to Ingram then through the hands of Stevens, Horwell, Murray and Morrell before a penalty was awarded to Scunthorpe who kicked to touch, from the lineout Barratts throw went to Hall then to Osborn and back to Barratt who was tackled, once again a penalty was awarded to Scunthorpe who with the ball in front of the posts opted to kick with Horwell boots seeing the points added to the total. Sheffield’s kick was caught by Warburton who was tackled into touch by the Sheffield pack, Hall was in quickly to the lineout throw but Sheffield managed to hold onto the ball until another mistake saw a penalty awarded to Scunthorpe who again made ground by kicking to touch. Barratts lineout throw was caught by Hall and passed to Osborn then Conroy, Christer, Lythgoe, Warburton and back to Osborn who was tackled Stevens collected the ball and passed to Conroy then Morrell who was tackled Osborn picked up the ball and made the last few metres before diving over the try line to score and then kicking the ball over for the conversion.
