Stormers V Thorne
Proud Mums all round
A beautiful sunny morning saw the players and parents gathering at Oglesby Park for the morning game of rugby. At the request of the Stormers players a minute silence was held following the attack and loss of life in London earlier in the week.
The Stormers got off to a flying start, with the ball coming out from a strong scrum to Stevens and then Murray-Auckland who between them fought through the Thorne players, off loading to Toyne who continued to make ground before passing the ball over to Morrell to score the opening try of the game. Before the spectators had time to draw a breath the Stormers were once again heading towards the try line Morrell having caught Thorne kick passing over to Stevens, Murray-Auckland and then back to Morrell, from the ruck Dawson picked up the ball using his size and strength to his advantage he made ground towards the line before passing over to Stevens who saw the ball safely over the try line and then over for the conversion. Thorne fought back making a fast break across the pitch to score their opening try. Scunthorpes kick was caught by Thorne but tackles by Parkin and Christer ensured that they made very little ground and a scrum was awarded to the Stormers good teamwork and pushing by the forwards in the scrum ensured that the ball came out cleanly and was passed to Morrell who ran in his second try of the day. Once again Thorne held nothing back and caught the Stormers napping in the sun to run in a quick try. Play continued with Thorne having the ball but were stopped in their tracks following a tackle by Dawson, Craze took the ball forward before it was knocked on by Murr. Thorne held on to the ball for a few minutes and following tackles by Dawson and Stevens, Hall collected the ball and fought his way forward passing over to Murray-Auckland. Thorne stole the ball back but made very little ground with it as a tackle by Conroy and then teamwork in a maul by the forwards of Armitage, Barrett, Hall, Bradwell and Lythgoe saw them switch to moving the ball across the pitch allowing Craze to tackle and from a ruck Hall and Murr worked together to move the ball out and to the Stormers of Ingram, Stevens and Murray-Auckland, Thorne regained possession for a short period of time until a tackle by Conroy saw the ball go through the hands of Murray-Auckland, Hall and Stevens all of whom fought their way towards the try line, from a scrum the ball went from Ingram to Stevens and then over to Conroy who once again put the ball down safely over the line. The Scunthorpe kick saw Thorne attempt to make a break down but tackles by Warburton and Barrett put paid to that the ball found the hands of Stevens who made a break down the wing before a scrum was awarded this time seeing Armitage using his size to plough through the opposition before they eventually stopped him he popped the ball out to Murray-Auckland who ran and swallow dived the ball safely over the line to score.
The second half saw Thorne come out determined with them using a set piece to score a 2 trys and conversions in the opening few minutes. Not to be out done the Christer collected the ball from a Thorne kick, passing to Ingram who made ground passing over to Morrell to score, a few minutes later from the Scunthorpe kick Thorne dropped the ball Conroy ran forward collecting the loose ball as he came through and continued onto the try line to score. From the restart the Stormers showed good teamwork to ensure that Thorne didn’t make any ground a tackle by Morrell saw the ball passed out to Warburton who ran in to score a try. Scunthorpe kicked and chased well with Dawson landing a tackle to get the ball back in to the Stormers hands allowing them to continue to make ground towards the try line. A scrum allowed the forwards to once again show their strength pushing Thorne back and a set play got the ball over to Toyne who placed it safely over the try line. Play continued with nothing more to add to the score sheet.
Man of the Match: Matthew Morrell for his strong running and pace onto the ball
