Stormers V Thorne

A try fest on a beautiful sunny day

A beautiful sunny morning saw the players and parents taking the short drive over to Thorne for the mornings rugby.

The game started with Scunthorpe kicking the ball which was cleanly caught by Thorne only to be tackled by Scunthorpe and the ball finding the hands of Morrell, it went through the hands of several players before returning to Morrell who made ground passing over to Conroy who went through to score the opening try of the game along with the conversion. Thornes kick at the restart was caught by Craze passing over to Lythgoe, Conroy, Toyne, Morrell and then Stevens who was then pushed into touch by the Thorne players. With Thorne having control of the ball Christer and Craze worked and tackled together to ensure that very little ground was made, from a scrum Thorne took the ball forward a few metres before being stopped by a tackle from Toyne. With the ball back in Scunthorpe hands Stevens passed to Dawson who ploughed through the Thorne defence before passing to Wilkinson. Good team play saw Hall and Lythgoe working together to pile on the pressure and even when the ball swapped sides back to Thorne a tackle by Dawson stopped them in their tracks and the loose ball was picked up by Toyne before going through the hands of Morrell, Conroy, Christer and Craze. A scrum awarded to Thorne saw the power of the Scunthorpe pack pushing clear over the ball allowing Stevens to pick it up and pass to Conroy then Morrell who spotted a gap and made his way through it. With another scrum awarded to Thorne a tackle from Christer saw them panic throw the ball which was caught by Lythgoe, from a maul the forwards worked together to ensure that the ball stayed with Scunthorpe going through the hands of Stevens and Morrell who linked play taking the ball towards the line, Morrell passed to Wilkinson who made the final few metres before passing to Craze who delivered the ball safely over the line to score. Thornes kick to restart was too long so a scrum was played from the half way line and once again the pack showed their power clearing the ball out with the ball coming from the hands of Stevens and through the hands of Conroy, Christer, Murr, Stevens and Bradwell who was tackled but the support was in place and the ball stayed in the hands of Scunthorpe. Craze took the ball forward at pace passing to Morrell and then Toyne who was taken down by a tackle, green ball was played from the ruck and the ball went through the hands of Stevens, Bradwell and Morrell who was stopped just short of the try line but passed to Lythgoe who took the ball over to score. Scunthorpe took the kick and with good linking play and support the ball passed through Stevens, Morrell, Conroy, Parkin and Christer who placed the ball down securely over the line to score. Thorne kick at the start was caught safely by Lythgoe who ran the ball forward offloading the ball which went through the hands of the team before Morrell safely placed it over the try line. What followed was almost a repeat but this time, Conroy caught the ball dodging through the Thorne defence before offloading and Murr put the ball safely over the line.

Half time score 36-0

The second half saw uncontested scrums at the request of Thorne. Scunthorpe kick was caught by Thorne who passed across the pitch to the big No8 who Hall tackled and bounced off, Thorne held the ball but teamwork from Scunthorpe saw them not able to make much of it and they passed the ball back to their No8, this time Hall lined up the tackle and took him to the ground allowing Scunthorpe to regain possession and the ball went through the hands of Stevens, Toyne, Murr and Morrell before going back to Conroy who popped the ball over the try line. Thorne kicked the ball which was picked up by Barrett and with support from Hall and Craze Barrett continued to make ground, Thorne regained possession of the ball for a few minutes but Morrell tackled the big No8 with a stunning tackle and the ball was stolen back from the ruck with superb teamplay Scunthorpe continued to make ground before Morrell put the ball down over the try line with a swallow dive that Chris Ashton would have been proud of . Thornes kick was collected by Armitage who made ground before passing to Morrell and then back to Armitage before a scrum was awarded to Thorne who took the ball out kicking it straight into the safe arms of Barrett who ran forward holding onto the ball and laying it back in textbook fashion when he was tackled, Hall collected the ball and powered through several Thorne players before he was stopped and Thorne stole the ball back deciding to kick it which was swiftly picked up by Dawson passing across to Toyne and with the team working together nothing Thorne threw at them worked for very long and Stevens got the ball safely over to score. Thorne refused to give up and came back with some strong attacking play making ground but a powerful tackle by Hall slowed them down and the follow up tackle by Conroy saw them being driven backwards. Superb defensive tackles by Armitage, Hall, Conroy and Stevens allowed Craze to steal the ball and with quick feet he ran ¾ the length of the pitch to score a try. Thornes kick was safely caught by Stevens who ran forward making lots of ground before passing the ball through the hands of Morrell, Stevens, Bradwell, Conroy and finally Lythgoe who made it over the line with the ball only for it to be held up, from the scrum the ball went to Conroy who placed the ball over the line to score. Before you could blink it was the final minutes of the game but Scunthorpe were determined to continue, Barrett took the ball forward before being tackled again putting the ball back so it could be picked up and then passed back to Barrett who made ground passing to Morrell then to Toyne who placed the ball over the try line for the final try of the game.
