Scunthorpeu13 v Doncaster u13
Professional surroundings for this week
Scunthorpe have felt blessed of late all these home games, decent weather, and glorious rugby, so we decided to mix it up a bit by going away and it was freezing...
We didn't travel far, just down the road to Doncaster to play in what is probably the best ground and facilities we play in - this is what to expect from a pro team, something for the boys to aspire to.
You could tell the difference in our clubs, proper markers in stead of cones, a respect barrier, awesome flat pitch and if you went inside there was a track for the mini mini's to have a bash at under 5's if only we knew of a multi-millionaire with an interest in Rugby... anyone?!?!
What looked like a perfect day for Rugby when we got out of the car was a bit chilly and windy up on the pitch, we had made the decision to place all our kicks to the left, the science would suggest if we slice it then it should still make the required 10 meters, during warm up everything went to plan, during the game Lewis and Jack decided they thought nah we'll boot it wherever - working on the resilience of our players and their own creativity.
The first 20 mins were a tight affair with both our try's being as a result of Doncaster mistakes which Oskar seized on and use a great fend and then good speed went through. These were intersected by a try for Doncaster. The scrums were about even, with Alf T, Greeny and Jake K, in a bit of a battle with their front row, Adam and Scott working hard in the second row and Charley, tidying up lots of messy ball. Jake K having a good game in the tight, back to somewhere near his best, along with Adam who goes about largely unnoticed to those that don't know what work he is actually getting through.
At the end of the third, we decided to make subtle adjustments to how we were playing knowing we weren't going to run through the middle as had done before despite great carries from Scott and Alf T, but the backs showed they had the beating of their counterparts, and we played text book rugby, win the ball through the forwards; backs do their thing, Try's followed in the second 20 for Alf O hitting a good line, the next try was a thing of beauty as Greeny offloaded out the tackle to Jack S, he then did the same to Alf O who went through the gap to get his 2nd, the 3rd was a great rip in the tackle by Alf T, the ball went to Big Josh who ran in from way out, 4th was a great switch by Jack M, who recognised the overload on the left and threw a great pass the ball went out to big josh and he went in again for a quick fire brace. Our last try was again through Alf O who used great feet to go through the line. Lewis at full back was tackled and took a knock, doing our own version of the HIA he competently counted 3 fingers, told us he was playing rugby but then struggled with where we were, not taking an interest in who we're playing; just that we're playing, he managed to walk a straight line so we were happy he'd pass, the moments rest gave us the opportunity to mix it about a bit, Jack M dropping to 15, Alf O to 10, Dante into the centres Will to 9 - we mixed it up which threw us off our stride but we were happy as you never know when we will need a replacement.
The 3rd 3rd Doncaster struck first, but we were soon back scoring tries as the ball worked its way to Big Josh, followed by the other wing by Lewis and Oskar secured his hat trick as we moved people about letting them learn new positions.
A great team display all round, line speed was excellent often making tackles 5 yards behind the gain line, led well by Dante, Will did well at 9 the ball was released well by Jack Murr, and Alf O was outstanding everywhere, The forwards really worked had led by the experienced trio of Alf T, Greeny and Charley winning lots of ball to release the backs. Jake Sephton played really well after coming on and once little Josh sank lower in the scrums we were dominant there too
Fantastic team performance all round - well done boys
They now can enjoy the half term hols, getting up at lunch, playing xbox and generally laying about, eating everything in sight....
