Selby Rufc vs Scunthorpe RUFC
2nd game of a busy weekend
Oh yes chocolate Easter Eggs the kids boasted about, i got 3, i got 4, i ate mine in one day they all said only a week ago, little did they remember coaches evil master plan to make them do 3 activity days in 3. Also those who played Saturday had to go a full day without a xbox or PS4 meaning they wouldn't get hold of the treasured controller till after lunch on Sunday. Evil dictator coaches.
Friday; Tony, Gemma and Charley travelled all the way to London stayed over, spent a small holidays worth of money on a burger and getting fleeced by the Harlequins shop, only to watch the England superstars play a 3rd team standard of rugby, conversely Rob and Dave took the kids to Sandbach who had invited us for a curtain raiser game, before the 1's game, Scunthorpe the victors as they tucked into their cornish pasty and chips how they lolled (down with the kids) at Tony having to drive 3hours 30 mins back to Scunthorpe, and to top it off the seniors who were also victorious bought them all a McDonalds!
Well done to all the lads who travelled Levi Storrs and Connor on debut, Levi scoring the winner with the last play other scorers through Chris Green, Alfie O and Big Josh.
Sunday and we went off to Selby, lovely morning on the 1's pitch and a few tired legs but no sympathy here saying they'd be stiffer tomorrow!
We took the opportunity to mix the team up a bit Charley centres and Josh's build lending himself more to the pack, Levi "the tackle monster" Storrs to 8.
With Charley and Will in the centres our defensive line performed at it's best all season, Connor and Oliver on the wings kept them secure and were positional aware. Our side did look a lot bigger than our Selby counterparts, but give them all the credit as they didn't give up, and on a few occasions the positional sense of the Selby boys in the ruck blasted ours out of the way. Our tries came from a long way out but they looked the part Big Josh, Chris Green, Charley Wilkinson and Levi scored in the first 20 for us to lead 0-20.
Introduce our 3rd debutante of the weekend; Jack Walker and the first thing he did was run through the middle touching down, Jack Murr, Charley Wilkinson, Big Josh following a decent run by little Josh, Jack Walker, Big Josh completed the scoring. 0-50
Will Horner had moved to 9 and Dante to hooker, but a little like league we ended up playing with two 9's which strangely worked in attack, Riley came onto the wing for our 4th debut. The trio of props Jake Kreamer, Dylan cLARE, and Little Josh ran round like the 3 amigo's and then were joined by Oliver in a move which every front row secretly dreams of; Dylan goes on the wing. This coupled with the always hard working pair of Jake Sephton and Scott Kelly made our tight 5 solid. Scott having to work extra hard with the ball in hand as if we were going to pick a learning point it was our support being off the pace. Jake also having a bash at prop and lifting his opposite number off the floor!!!
Jack Murr with Will and Dante feeding him, called some great moves, maybe he learnt something off his uncle yesterday other than how to chug a can.
In an effort to improve our game we asked for 3 phases before a score, we kind of adopted this but when through its hard to stop and lie down, Jack Walker got his 3rd and 4th, Levi scored 3 and Charley scored to grab one in each period.
Have i mentioned everyone who played? no just one left, Lewis - who had been busy Lewising players all morning, the last in the bottom corner being the best stopping a certain try, dislodging the ball, other notable tackles; Dante who saw the opposition had made a half attempt to get up, so went through him leaving a "dante" body imprint in his opponent.
All in all, the adage of a good big un, beats a good little un is probably apt.
All this and everyone paid their subs - another point to Jack M, no-one left anything in the changing rooms, a good Sunday!!
Onto next week where we'll only train 5 days and play 2.
