Greens Win The Lincolnshire Cup

Entertaining Game for Spectators with 16 tries scored on the day

The Senior County final kicked off in Brilliant sunshine and followed the Colts County final in which The Greens won the trophy in a hard fought game against home club, Kesteven.

The Greens first team squad contained quite a few young aspiring players of the future in their squad, in Liam Brunt, Jay Johnson, Kane Linklater and Jess Mathews. Their opponents from Market Rasen had just finished their league season with a relegation, so expectations in the Scunthorpe camp were high.

The Greens were straight out of the traps and put Rasen under immediate pressure. Their defence initially held out but following a series of phases close to the line, Will Robinson crossed for a try close to the posts. Robinson converted and put The Greens in front by 7 points to nil after 5 minutes of play. A long down-field clearance by Rasen was fielded by full-back Brunt, who ran the ball back and went through the opposition defence for an outstanding try. The conversion was missed but Scunthorpe were now 12 points to nil ahead after 13 minutes. The next score came 5 minutes later when Colin Chapman ran in from an overlap on the left wing. With the conversion again being missed the score was now 17 points to nil in the 18th minute.

Robinson ran in his second after 32 minutes and also added the extras for a 24 points to nil lead. This was followed 5 minutes later by a Tom Foster touch-down also converted by Robinson. With the score-line at 31 points to nil, Rasen at last got some reward for their endeavour when Colin Janney forced his way over from close range. Tom Alldridge added the conversion to take the teams into the interval with The Greens leading by 31 points to 7.

Scunthorpe struck again early in the half when Josh Bird ran in under the posts to give Robinson a straightforward conversion and a 38 points to 7 advantage. Ten minutes later and Robinson ran in a try from long range to complete his hat-trick and also adding the extras for a 45 points to 7 score-line. With their opponents now tiring in the hot sun, Scunthorpe ran in further tries through Tom Foster who went on to also complete a hat-trick in the 23rd minute of the second half. Robinson’s conversions now made the score line 61 points to 7. The ever industrious Grant Elliott touched down in the 25th minute, followed by a fourth for Robinson and a brace for Chapman, bringing the score to 80 points to 7 after 35 minutes.

A late rally by Market Rasen brought the reward of two late tries both converted with outstanding strikes by Alldridge giving them 21 points but the last score ironically went to former Rasen player Ollie Cole who powered through and stretched for the line to touch down in added time. Robinson converted to complete an outstanding 40 points haul in the game that produced 16 tries, 13 to The Greens, giving great entertainment to the sweltering spectators and a final score-line of 87 points to 21.

A great finish to what was a satisfying season following a disappointing start. It is now all to build for come September.
