1st XV Lose to South Leicester

Greens let themselves down in poor second half showing

Scunthorpe travelled to Welford Road without Steve Johnson, Adam Middleton Paul Cook and Danny Vannett.

Conditions were good, with little wind and a dry surface. The home boys were first to show and after only 8 minutes, Nick Cairns touchdown from the back of a maul. Rick Aley converted to put South on their way with a 7 points to nil advantage. It was only 3 minutes later that the Leicestershire outfit went even further ahead when Jacob Heath exploited an overlap on the right wing to score. Aley once more converted and South were looking comfortable at 14 points to nil up in the 11th minute.

Scunthorpe gradually came back into the game with some good mid-field play by Ash Dibdin and Oli Wood orchestrated by Tom Foster. They won a penalty just outside the home ‘22’ and Jack Badley converted to put The Greens on the board after 19 minutes. Play moved from end to end with Scunthorpe marginally having the better of the exchanges, Refereeing eccentricities permitting. A mid-field break by Ash Dibdin was extended by James Dyson who beat the cover to score close to the posts just before the end of the first period. Badley converted to take his team into the interval only 14 points to 10 down and everything to play for.

The second half was only two minutes old when Scunthorpe had hooker Gareth Mist dismissed to the bin. He was closely followed by his opposite number two minutes later. The Greens still looked very much in the hunt and only over exited passing let them down at crucial times. Ball retention was of the essence but in the 17th minute came the turning point, when a stray pass by The Greens led to the home side toe ending the loose ball down the pitch and in the foot race to touchdown, Oli Wood was deemed to have impeded his opposite number and the Referee awarded a penalty try and Wood was binned. Aley’s conversion was followed shortly thereafter by a penalty making the scoreline after 25 minutes of the second half, 25 points to 10. Scunthorpe never recovered from this double blow and following another yellow card they conceded 3 late tries for a final scoreline of 43 points to 10. The points differential does not really reflect the game as a whole and says quite a lot about the difficulty in interpreting Referee Luis Caviglia idea of the laws.

With Sheffield Tigers winning at home to Hinckley, they now move ahead of The Greens in the table danger zone
