A battling performance but stil no point!

Westfield provided Seaford Town with their final opponents at the Crouch before Christmas

Westfield provided Seaford Town with their final opponents at the Crouch before Christmas with Seaford hoping to avenge the 2-4 defeat they suffered when the sides met at the Parish Field in early September.
New signing from Ringmer, Kieran Perkins was included after his transfer was completed just ahead of the Friday deadline and he certainly added energy and strength to the midfield. Also included was Ben Courtnage who had missed the last two games through injury, with Michael Flynn coming into the centre of defence in place of the injured David Hawes.
Town went behind in the 26th minute after Ben Head had made a tremendous point-blank save from Curtis Coombes. Unfortunately the resulting corner was played towards the penalty spot where Jethro Warren was unmarked and his bullet header gave Head no chance to intercept.
The lead didn’t last long as Town struck back just 4 minutes later. Courtnage won the ball inside his own half and picked out Theo Baker with a precision pass. Under pressure from a defender his first touch was immaculate and he was able to turn away from his marker, then with the ‘keeper fast approaching his early shot deceived him and nestled sweetly in the bottom corner.
It was Baker’s first goal of the season from only his second game after returning from a serious knee injury which he picked up during pre-season. Sadly his services only lasted until half-time when he was withdrawn with a slight knock.
Town had the best of the early exchanges of the second period but it was the visitors who restored their advantage with 18 minutes remaining. The ball was played wide down the Seaford left and the cross from the goal-line was met at the far post by Coombes who headed in from a yard.
It was a real blow and Westfield could have extended their advantage but for the agility of Head who managed to tip over a rasping drive from 20 yards.
To their credit they picked up in the final minutes but couldn’t find the cutting edge to snatch their first point of the season. With only 2 games left before the New Year they will have to find a change of fortune if they are to improve on what has been a horrendous 2014.On Saturday they travel to Bexhill United, then on 27th Saltdean United come to the Couch for a game which could present Town with their best hope of breaking their duck.
Team: Head, Paston (Brown), Stannard, O’Donnell, Flynn, B.Barnett, Acton, Perkins, Courtnage (Le Cras), Hayward, Baker (Piperakis)
