Senior Colts Captain Paddy Paine returns with his insight as he brings us up to speed on Colts matters in the Fourteenth of his Young Turks articles.

Well, after weeks of dwelling on what we could and should have done, I can finally say that we have won this weekend and we had a full team!

We beat Anselmians 17-3 at home in what was quite an open game of rugby at times.

Although it was nowhere near our best performance of the season, the really important thing is that we got back to winning ways and sometimes that’s all you need to give confidence levels a boost throughout the team.

The win couldn’t have come at a better time as it puts us in a good position going into this Sunday’s huge game against Rossendale in the Lancashire Cup.

We took a while to get going on Sunday as Anselmians, although a man down, were proving to be a very tough team to break down.

We have really struggled for fluency in attack especially this season because we seem to have a completely different team each week and this was really visible in the first half.

We did manage to get the only try of the first half as Josh Coates stepped back inside his opposite man to find a gap in the defence and score. The try was made a lot easier after some great forward work in the Anselmians 22. Rick Thorpe somehow missed the conversion though.

After some stern halftime words we went back out to prove a point and we did liven up but two long stoppages due to injuries to two Anselmians players killed off any of our early momentum.

Our second try was one of our best of the season as we ran the ball from a scrum on our own 5 metre line and recycled it very quickly to stretch the Anselmians defence up to the edge of their 22. Danny Toseland then hit a great line to break the defence, step the fullback and score to round off a great performance on his part.

After some solid defence on our own line to hold up Anselmians three times, we managed to get back downfield for Andy Heys to score a length of the 5 metre try! Tom Coe hit the conversion from touch.

This Sunday we are playing Rossendale in the Lancashire Cup. The game’s at home so all the support we can get will be much appreciated and it should be a cracking game to watch as well.

Take it easy
