The Third XV have another great league win to reach the dizzy heights of fifth in the league. Match report is written by Simon Heatherington.

SEDGLEY PARK THIRD XV 21
KIRBY LONSDALE SECOND XV 7

With the bad weather overnight many of our players were hoping the game wouldn’t take place. As it happens the sun was shining and it turned out to be great conditions for rugby.

A certain member was very upset that his car service was over very quickly and was able to play, mentioning no names. Mark O’Hern. One of our players and junior managers was in the bar watching the first team game (what example are you setting for the juniors)

The game kicked off with Sedgley setting the pace but poor tackling led to the first try of the game for Kirby Lonsdale. A stern talking to from our captain marvel was required. This spurred the Sedgley side on. And we came back strong!

0-7

The next 20 minutes was a good contest. Both sides competing well and playing some nice rugby

Sedgley first try came from some nice forward play creating a good platform for the backs. A nice pass from fly half John Walters found Jamie Kettleborough making a good line from the centres to go straight under the posts. Great try!! Kick converted.

7-7

The next 15 minutes involved a bad injury to one of the Kirby Lonsdale players. We needed to change pitches as an ambulance was required to take him to hospital.

All of the Sedgley Park players wish him a very speedy recovery and hope he gets back onto the rugby field as quickly as possible.

Get well soon!

That unfortunate injury aside, one funny moment of the first half was when, Sedge playing some good running rugby started switching the play from side to side and somehow Ducky and Bohdan ended up on the wing. The try line was begging.

Bohdan somehow managed to catch the ball, he then passed to Ducky who didn't. Not the first choice players of the team to be found in that position.

Half time 7-7

A few changes were made at half time.

Todd Keers decided to get out of bed this week. Kirby came back strongly putting the Sedgley side under some pressure but with the last few weeks what has been evident has been our good defence and never say die attitude.

It’s quite evident what a good run of victories can do. Unfortunately our attacking play isn’t quite there... a good period of at least 20 minutes of pressure in the Kirby half didn’t bring any points.

A mention must go to Chris Hobbs who somehow received a pass from the Kirby scrum half. Chris was stood over the try line, all he had to do was catch the ball and put the ball down. Unfortunately he didn’t catch the ball and his words can’t be repeated.

Our second and Jamie Kettleborough’s brace came from an interception on the half way line. He showed good pace to burn off the Kirby covering defence. Another good try. Kick converted

7-14

The last 15 minutes was all Sedgley. Our final try came from again you guessed it, Jamie for his hatrick. Good centre play from him and mustang put him under the posts again after the forwards turned Kirby over.

Again kick converted. It’s amazing the impressive conversion rate when the kicks are right under the posts.

21-7

Sedgley then killed the game off. A penalty was awarded with the final play of the game. The captain called for the kick. The kick was missed and final score was 21-7.

Credit must go to the Sedgley side. It was up there with one of the best performances of the season. Players making themselves available every week and enjoying their rugby is certainly helping.

Next week we travel to Fylde which will be a tough encounter, let’s hope the 45 minute drive doesn’t put some of our players off!
