You Can't Coach Spirit
And we showed plenty...
We played our third round of fixtures in the Lancs Cup at Widnes under the flood lights on Friday night. Against two strong teams in Waterloo and Widnes and with a heavily depleted side, we knew it'd be a tough ask...

Against Widnes we started the better side but couldn't convert any of our chances into scores. We held the majority of the territory but our final pass wasn't quite up to scratch. The first half was scoreless, then Widnes opened their account with a fantastic try from their brilliant fullback. We then proceeded to kick the ball straight to him and he scored another. Their third was a slice of luck and opportunism, their centre kicked and in all truth it wasn't a great kick but it was really awkward to defend and their scrum half pounced and went in for a try. We could easily have been in the game but little things let us down. Sam salved some pride with a well taken try at the end.
A game of two halves. Waterloo thumped us the first. Plain and simple. They used the ball supremely well and their fly half Rhys who has rockets in his boots ran in a number of tries to effectively kill the game. However, our reaction to this was simply fantastic. We went out there second half and didn't let our chins drop, we took the game to Waterloo, were aggressive in defence and carried hard in attack. We won a lot of turnover ball through our hardworking forwards and the backs clicked well looking to work some nice moves. We could easily have scored a couple of tries but Waterloo's goal line defence remained solid. They scored the only try of the second half again through their flying 10. But truly we had the better of the second half and if we'd have played that way the whole game we'd have ran them closer, even with all the players missing.
Well done to Widnes and Waterloo on their wins, you're both really strong sides. Waterloo in particular were a classy outfit and among the teams to beat in the Lancs Cup without a doubt. Every player who pulled on a Sefton shirt can hold their head high after that second half performance, you all played your heart out.
