Vale of Lune Festival
Not our best day at the office but decent effort.
Sorry for the shortness of this report today, lost my match notes and going all off memory! We travelled to the Vale of Lune Festival for what turned out to be an enjoyable day yet a slightly odd from a rugby perspective!
Forwards-Ellis, Joel H, Anthony, Kostas, Ali, Matthew, Jay K, Will, Matthew, Ariss
Backs-Tom W, Dan, Sam, Mikey, Tom K, Jay P, Callum, Kealan, Ruban, Joel Mc
We played 3 group games against Trafford MV, West Park and Waterloo A, three teams we are really familiar with so we knew we’d be in for some tough but winnable games.
A draw against Trafford MV was a good result as they're a really strong side and we defended resiliently for the best part of the game, both teams wasted some chances and little mistakes let us down. Sam scored our only try, a smart blind side finish, in a 1-1 draw. Fair score in an enjoyable game. MOTM Sam-great running, some smart play and good in defence.
Next was West Park, we created most of the games chances but failed to convert and didn’t defend aggressively enough against their big forwards. 0-0 in the end in a rather cagey affair where we knew could have done better, but over all not a bad effort against a tough side to break down. MOTM Tom W-excellent delivery from 9, brave in defence against a big side.
Waterloo A were next, a team we beat earlier in the season but who really showed their quality in the cup against us using the ball well scoring 6 tries. We went back to basics to start with the forwards winning turnover ball and smashing through the Waterloo pack. Mikey eventually stormed through for a good opening try. However mistakes crept into our game and a classy and click Waterloo outfit punished us by scoring 2 very avoidable tries with our own mistakes gifting them in it. We still applied pressure but they scored a glorious try at the end with a fantastic cut out pass and diving finish in the corner. MOTM Mikey-great try and aggressive in defence.
We qualified of the Vase here we played Vale of Lune and Waterloo B. Against Vale we competed well but completely lacked creativity in attack with no running options for the half backs and the backs struggling to create continuity. Ruban moved to the unfamiliar position centre to utilise his outstanding defence against some big centres from Vale and did really well. We defended well against their big aggressive pack but conceded two tries out wide. Effort was there but execution poor. Can easily be fixed with add work in training! MOTM tie: Ali-turned over a lot of ball and Putin a shift, Tom K-great running, one of our only dangerous attacking options.
We finally clicked in the last game against Waterloo B, out forwards finally started attacking the ruck, our backs passed it well and we held our line effectively. Kostas scored a great try after breaking the line in midfield and soon after nearly created another with anther great break. Our second came tom a scum, a great pass by Tom K set off Callum to beat three defenders and score a great try. Callum then turned provider, betting couple of defenders then feeding Sam who beat another then finished brilliantly in the corner. Dan put the icing on the cake, intercepting their’s 9’s pass and racing away to dive over a score after out standing pressure was applied by the pack. MOTM Kostas-vintage Kostas he ran hard, rucked well and found some nice offloads.
Based off other results from around the festival today, I’ve got to say we really should have been pushing for a place in the plate, we were in a tough group but our quality never quite came out. However the effort was generally good, same with the behaviour so well done lads.
-Tried some inventive play.
-Really strong start against Waterloo A good to see.
-Defensive line improved massively.
-Ruban playing well at centre, a position he will shine in once he gains more experience and matures his skill.
-Behaviour was really good.
-Forwards won some good turnover ball.
-The back play against Waterloo B was superb.
Areas for improvement (most of which picked by the lads!):
-Little skill errors costing us greatly need working on.
-Pack too slow to the ruck and not aggressive enough.
-Lack of support play.
-Discipline, giving silly penalties away.
PGH next week lets show everyone what we can do! Cheers everyone. Hope the lads all enjoyed the day.
