The ladies started strong and held possession very well. Key links were made between defence and midfield to ensure that Valley had no way through. Player of the match Alice Wood made her presence known from centre midfield linking well with Captain Kelly Cauley
and Megan Birch
. It was Cauley who sent the ladies ahead with a nutmeg on the Valley keeper.
Valley responded, but with stalwarts Angie O’Mahoney and Jenni Davey
in defence this didn’t amount to anything. They were backed up by Clare Tremayne
, who has made an earlier return from injury.
It was Mrs O who sent a long ball down the centre of the pitch, which landed on the end of Cauley’s stick, who in turn took on numerous Valley players including the keeper and slotted in Selby’s second.
Half time came at the right time, as the ladies were tiring. A lot of fluids were taken on board, due to the heat. Selby continued the pressure and forced a short corner. Franii Brooks
took control of the pass out, sending the ball to Cauley, who passed to Davey. Davey then stumbled to the floor but amazingly got up before the Valley defender reached her and reversed the ball into the back of the net.
Selby were then determined to keep the lead so sat back and let Valley pass the ball. Brooks and Kym Hurst
took charge of the side lines and kept the Valley pressure at bay. But Valley was awarded a short corner and converted it coolly. This made Selby even more determined to keep the lead, which saw Selby keep the possession for the rest of the game, with a few more shots at goal just narrowly missed.
With only 2 games left of the season, Selby can now relax and enjoy the games knowing they are safe for next season.
A big thank you to Sarah-Jane Taylor
for umpiring and doing a great job!
Selby travel to Ben Rhydding next week.
