The Youth Club started 2014 by running in 10 tries against a threadbare Hawick PSA team.
The Youth Club pitch was in relatively good shape considering the amount of rain during the week. The game was closely contested at the start with the Hawick forwards trying to dominate the scrums. The Youth Club were keen to run the ball through the backs wherever possible and after 10 minutes took the lead after some pressure near the Hawick try line and scrum half Scott Francis pounced on a Hawick mistake to touch down, Darren Knox missing the conversion.. Hawick tried hard to make some headway in the Youth Club half but found determined resistance from the Youth Club forwards with Andrew Toole in impressive form. After 17 minutes the Youth Club showed good passing from Knox to hard running Bruce McKerracher who offloaded to prop Sam McKay who set up winger Lewis Martin to dive over in the corner, Knox kicking the conversion from near the touchline. The PSA then worked their way well into the Youth Club half but just could not find a way through. The Youth Club gained possession when flanker Finlay Amos robbed the ball from Hawick and Knox chipped over the advancing Hawick backs to collect the ball and touch down. With half time approaching and some Hawick players becoming indisciplined Scott Francis was alert to sneak through and score in the corner, Know again kicking over to make the half time score 24 points to Nil.
The Youth Club coaches made some changes at half time with Harry Borthwick making his debut for the Youth Club and showed some impressive play throughout the half. It took some time before the Youth Club increased their lead against a stubborn Hawick team but after some good play from the Youth Club strong running from winger Martin resulted in a score between the posts with Knox converting. Shortly after McKay scored after some good forward play, Knox converting to make it 38 points to Nil. Midway through the half Hawick began to struggle against a confident Youth Club team who were playing entertaining rugby and a strong run from McKerracher well into the Hawick half resulted in Hamish Robertson being on hand to score, Knox converting. Shortly after Jack Elliot finished off a good passing move involving backs & forwards. The floodgates began to open and despite Hawicks efforts they were unable to stem the flow and further tries were scored by Francis for his 3rd of the day, Know adding the extras, the next try from within the Youth Club half passing through many hands with full back Alan Rutter finishing off between the posts and Knox added a further 2 points. Just before full time an Ally Howieson surge resulted in Robertson touching down, Knox popping over the conversion to make the final score 71 points to Nil.
