Last Saturday high flying Melrose Wasps were the visitors to Selkirk and rran out winners by 48 points to 13.
The Youth Club made a good aggressive start and were unlucky not to take an early lead. Full back Alan Rutter knocked over a penalty to give the Youth Club the lead. Melrose began to advance into the Youth Club half and despite their pressure were finding the Youth Club to be working hard for each other. After 15 minutes Melrose touched down only to be ruled off for a forward pass. A few minutes later Melrose moved the ball wide and their winger evaded a few attempted tackles to score and convert and taking the lead by 7 points to 3. The Youth Club managed to advance well into the Melrose half on several occasions but lost possession on several occasions resulting in the Melrose backs attacking from within their own half at pace and slicing open the Youth Club resulting in 3 well taken tries, one being converted to take a 24 points to 3 lead just before half time. The Youth Club forwards were a match for Melrose but the Youth Club backs unable to cope with the pace of the Melrose attack. However the Youth Club scored a try just before half time when Rutter touched down in the corner.
The second half was played in a similar fashion with the Youth Club working hard for each other and had a period where they held their own until Melrose exploded from their own half and scored a further 2 tries to make it 34 points to 8. The Youth Club applied some pressure on the Melrose defence and centre Fergus Hitchcock touching down. Play swung from end to end but Melrose managed to score a further 2 tries, both converted in the final 10 minutes making the final score 48 points to 13.
