The Reserves were finally on the road to play Beeston Rylands in a league encounter after a few weeks off with postponements. absences for the lads were Jamie Hassell starting a 3 match ban and Jake simpson not available.
having lost our last four games we were hoping for a good start to the match to give us a bit of confidence but all we got with 2 minutes in was a miss controlled ball in the middle of the park leading to a Beeston striker through on goal and slipping the ball under Joe Marson for 1-0. The total opposite then from what we were looking for and we were already up against it. First chance for Selston fell to Jordan Black on 7 minutes but his shot was well saved by Daniel Burke in goal after some good approach play. On 12 minutes Tom Widdowson burst down the left, cut into the box and got his shot away only for the keeper to save well with his feet. Cameron Gascoyne was replaced by Joe Toon after Gascoyne had rolled his ankle and couldn't continue. For the next 20 minutes the game was a bit of a stalemate. Selstons ball work was decent and we were creating chances but a lack of fight was making it to easy for Beeston to create chances as well. Tom Widdowson received the ball with his back to goal about 8 yards out, turned and hit a right foot shot which looked to be heading into the bottom corner but a brilliant save low down denied Widdowson and Luke Wigley couldn't turn the rebound in and Beeston cleared on 35 minutes.
Half time came and we were a little unlucky to be 1-0 down. Rylands could thank there keeper for their lead but the lads needed to start getting a foot in and winning some second balls taking a leaf out of the home sides book as they worked tirelessly for the entire half.
So looking to start well in the second half and yes you guessed it on 49 minutes the ball was in our net when a cross into the box was swept home for 2-0. The lads seem to have a bit of a concentration problem that needs to get sorted as we are not alert from certain situations.
In truth we hadn't got going at all second half and on 55 minutes the game was probably out of our reach when Beeston made it 3-0. A long throw into our box was brought down by a striker who had all the time in the world to turn and pick his spot leaving Marson in goal with no chance. No sign of challenge and the Lads were looking a bit soft with Beeston the total opposite not giving us a minute on the ball .
Reagon Marriot replaced Jamie Shacklock on 60 minutes to hopefully add a bit of steel in the middle of the park. On 60 minutes Jordan Black went through on goal but his shot was straight at the keeper. We nearly pulled one back on 63 minutes when a cross shot was met by Callum Howell but his effort was cleared off the line. On 70 minutes we finally had the ball in the net when a Luke Wigley cross dropped to the feet of substitute Joe Toon and he finished from close range for 3-1. Just when we thought a come back may be on Beeston scored a fortuitous goal when a cross from the by line looped over Joe Marson hit the far post and dropped in for 4-1 On 76 minutes. Lee Widdowson replaced the injured Jack-Henry Melbourne on 80 minutes. The last 15 minutes saw 2 more good chances for the lads. Joe Toon hit a sweet volley from close range which the keeper saved again well with strong hands and Luke Wigley got on the end of a cross but only manage to poke the ball over the bar from 2 yards out.
Time up then and it was our 5th defeat in a row and we couldn't really complain to much. At times we were good with the ball and missed a lot of chances, Also Beeston keeper Daniel Burke coming up with a man of the match performance didn't help the lads. We really suffered though on the other side of the game, the ugly stuff that Beeston did very well. MOM for Selston went to Jordan Black. On to the next game then and lets hope we can get a win soon as we seem to be going through the motions at the moment. We can still finish in the top half with a lot of games in hand but have to show a lot more bite and commitment and hopefully we will.
