Sharks back to winning ways in impressive fashion

A Man of the Match performance from Jordan Anderson led Shaw Cross Sharks to a 38-10 victory over Hunslet Warriors. Looking to get back to winning ways after being dumped out of the Jim Brown Cup Brett Turner's side put in a commanding performance.

Sharks have an impressive record coming back after defeats. The team have won every game after a loss scoring at least 30 points in the process and that proved to be true once more.

The game was barely two minutes old when half back Sam Ottewell got in at the far corner after skipping past a tackler. Casey Johnson missed the resulting goal kick in what would be a poor day for Sharks' kickers missing five goal kicks on the day.

Hunslet were unable to settle into any kind of rhythm with Shaw Cross pinning the visitors back and forced an early goal line drop out.

Ben Spaven doubled the Sharks' lead with a simple try. He shot through the middle with pace and power across the line to give Shaw Cross and 8-0 lead in under ten minutes. Spaven said after the game that last week they never got going in the game:
"We never got to grips with it. Today we got stuck in and we had a lot of heart in the team. Obviously nobody likes losing like we did but it does mean we can just focus on the league and promotion."

Danny Flowers missed the game through injury but made his presence felt on the sidelines barking words of encouragement. It was Anderson making his presence felt on the field as he was integral in a good Sharks defence along with John Rourke, Brandan French and Johnson.

Hunslet's first real threat of the game came after twenty minutes when they broke the Shaw Cross line down the left but tremendous tracking back from Jack Gledhill, another star performer, extinguished any danger to Turner's team.

That did spark a slight revival from the visitors as they started getting deep into the half of the home side. However Tony Drury's squad were unable to make their pressure pay and committed costly penalties to give the Sharks some reprieve.

Hunslet did eventually get on the board with a try from Luke Powell and a successful goal kick. The try rattled the Sharks whom looked in control throughout the first half but started committing sloppy errors and giving up large chunks of meters.

Hunselt looked good value to be level until Robbie Byatt scored just before half time in the best move of the game. Ottewell collected a high kick and advanced the ball before offloading to Gledhill. He bustled his way to midfield before passing to old brother Ben Gledhill. The former Wakefield man stormed his way through the middle fighting his way past four would-be tacklers. Unselfishly he gave it to Byatt who scored his first of two on the day and his eighth of the season.

Hunslet could have arguably seen themselves a man light as Spaven was caught with a punch. The touch judge came rushing on to the field waving his flag frantically but referee Kevin Moore waved play on.

Just after half time Anderson got his second of the game and put in motion a flurry of quick tries for the home side and put the game to bed. Zach Moore turned on the afterburners and shot through the Hunslet line, he sent the ball wide to Anderson on the right and he jinked and skipped his way past three tacklers before finishing right between the sticks.

Just moments later French added his name to the list of scorers as he barged his way over the line to cap off yet another all action performance from the young second rower and put the Sharks 24-6 in front.

The visitors managed to close the gap with Paul Sebine bundling himself over the line in a rare lapse of concentration for the Sharks' water tight defence in the second half.

Soon after Byatt earned his second score of the game touching down on the far side and that was shortly followed by Anderson getting his second try of the day with a carbon copy of his first try as he collected a pass from Moore and jinked his way past the goal line.

With full time nearing there was to be one more try to cap off a swashbuckling performance from Anderson and company. Will Poching sent a delightful chip kick into the corner and Gledhill met the ball at its highest point with an impressive leap before plating the ball to rub salt in the Hunslet wounds.

Turner after the game paid homage to Poching as he stood in at stand off - a position he has never played before, and did a marvellous job.

The head coach felt the victory was the perfect response after the disappointment of last week: "I'm delighted. We briefly mentioned last week but we wanted to put that behind us." He said: "There's been a few times where we've had a bad game but we always react well to it that's one of our strengths."

Turner also felt the development of his younger players such as Ottewell, French, Poching, Gledhill and Moore has been superb and feels they've all made huge strides in their game.

Shaw Cross now face three away games on the spin including a trip to league leaders Ince Rose Bridge on June 13th.
