Courageous Sharks go down to York

Shaw Cross Sharks lost in heartbreaking fashion 22-24 to York Acorn in the NCL Division One Semi-Final.

A York try just three minutes from time was the difference in a truly dramatic clash which was riddled with twists and turns right to the end.

Brett Turner's side got out to an early lead when a delicious Jordan Anderson chip kick found Ross Roebuck in the near corner and he rose highest to collect the ball and plant it home. Anderson was seeing his first action in over two months after suffering a severe neck injury earlier in the season.

Just five minutes later it was 8-0 to the home side as Robbie Byatt sold two beautiful dummies out on the far side and galloped away from the 25 meter score. All the momentum looked to be with the Sharks as the visitors struggled to find any real momentum. Not long after it was 12-0 as Casey Johnson send a wonderful inside offload to the returning Anderson and he bundled his way under the posts the put the Sharks in a commanding position. Johnson converted to make it 14-0.

From then on it was all York until half time as they quickened up their play and controlled the ruck. York battled their way back into the game and levelled matters with the final play of the half as Josh Thompson got in at the far corner.

The second half started much as the first half did with Shaw Cross completing sets and looking the more dangerous side. Sam Ottewell, who had been quiet in the first half starting pushing up the field more and using his speed to cause havoc amongst the York defenders. Will Poching was controlling matters out of dummy half and the all action tandem of Johnson and Anderson was proving fruitful.

It was the home side who drew first blood in the second half as skipper Andrew Fawkes powered his way through two tacklers to get the score. Johnson added the extras and Shaw Cross were starting to reaffirm their dominance.

There was not a dull moment throughout the game as both sides swapped various errors just as they threatened the whitewash with huge sighs of relief and despair being felt on both benches.

York huffed and puffed to bring the scores level but with a scrum deep in their own half Thompson was sin binned for dissent and Johnson coolly kicked the two pointer to put Shaw Cross 22-14 up.

The Sharks could not take advantage of the extra man often getting o0t the York half but unable to convert their dominance into points. Tom Rogers was stopped at the goal line as was Matthew Byatt.

Turner's side started to tire with first Anderson the Roebuck going down with cramp, Anderson later coming off with an apparent knee problem. The tiring home team battled valiantly but when York scored again and converted the kick it set up a grand stand finish with just eight minutes left before the final push from York saw them get across in the far corner and condemn the courageous Sharks to shattering semi-final defeat.
