We catch up with Shaw Cross' "Swiss Army Knife"

He's got the background, the name and his father is well known is Rugby League circles. But Will Poching is not getting ahead of himself and has found a home in Shaw Cross with Shaw Cross Sharks.

The versatile player has become a key cog in Head Coach Brett Turner's plans this season with Turner giving him a special mention for his outstanding performance at stand-off in their last victory over Hunslet Warriors. It was the first time Poching had ever played the position.

Poching has had stints at half back, hooker and second row and has been adept at switching positions over the course of the season when injuries have limited selection proving to be the Swiss Army Knife of the squad.

Poching has been at Shaw Cross for two years now but had began his rugby playing career at Westgate before the club folded when he was just 16-years-old. He then made his way to the Sharks where he played at Under 18s level first but the hooker admitted it was hard to move on: "It was difficult. Obviously playing there every week and I played with some of my best mates there

The 18-year-old felt he made the transition smoothly though, he said: "I knew a few people here so it wasn't too much of a transition."

With his dad, Willie Poching, being the assistant coach at Hull KR as well as having a stellar playing career rugby league is in Poching's blood. The young hooker feels his dad has had a huge impact on his talents on the field: "He's a big influence, he's probably one of my harshest critics but I don't mind he's always helping me improve."

However Poching does still feel some pressure that comes with the name: "Every team you play there's always one or two people who know who you are so it is a bit of pressure but I don't mind it."

His speed, power and versatility has helped cause problems for the opposition when he's on the pitch and provides a reliable outlet for his teammates: "I think I can piece a bit of keys skills from each of those position and it helps benefit from whatever position I'm playing in."

When quizzed about the current campaign the versatile player feels that although the team have been hit and miss at times this season they will come good at the "business end" of the season: "We're starting to find our straps now. We've got a young squad and it's all about getting to know each other's game because individually we're all quality players."

Poching feels that although Turner's squad is not the biggest in terms of physical stature they are one of, if not the, most athletic squads in the whole division:
"Because we're one of the youngest teams in the competition it helps us to be a bit more athletic a bit fitter than other squad. I'd say that's one of our biggest strengths as a whole."
