Sharks Win Nailbiter to Claim 4th Place

The Sharks went in to this game needing a win to guarantee a play off spot and were made to sweat all the way by the spirited home side who are already relegated, the early pressure all came from Judes as the Sharks were starved of possession, The greasy conditions were making for a scrappy opening spell but the Sharks struck first when a dropped ball saw Brandan French scoop the ball up and sprint 60 metres in an exciting footrace to score under the posts, Casey Johnson converted and the 6-0 lead on 15 mins was just about deserved, Wigan struck back soon after their lively hooker skipped through a static defence to score, the kick was good and on 20 mins it was 6-6, Martin Holland was doing his best to spark the Sharks attack up and his persistence paid off when a wide shift saw Holland find Aiden Chandler on the charge and he blasted through from 30 metres for Johnson to add the extras 12-6, on the half hour Judes found good fortune with them when a couple of baffling calls put the Sharks on the rack and Judes went over to make it 12-10 , the Sharks were rattled and the half ended with Judes piling on the pressure to get over and take the lead 14-12, another missed conversion which proved costly in the end. Brett Turner gave his side a roasting at the break and they came out firing with a strong drive from Luke Hudson getting him over the line only for the Official to turn it down for a knock on, Roebuck then sprinted clear to dive in at the corner and the try was chalked off by the touch judge , The Sharks were beginning to think it was not their day when the superb French broke in the Centre and released Roebuck who this time left the Officials in doubt he had scored , Johnson hit a soaring conversion from the touchline to get the Sharks in front at 18-14, Steve Talbot, Matty Byatt , Declan Ellis and Jame Davies were responding well to the promptings of Johnson and Holland and when the ball was moved wide Robbie Byatt crashed through the line to score taking 3 defenders over with him, Johnsons conversion hit the post but at 22-14 they had an 8 point lead going in to the final 10mins, youngsters Sam Ottewell & Joe Halloran were probing and Will Poching was lively in possesion but the home side hit back with a converted try and at 22-20 it was a nailbiting finish but John Rourke and Greg Wilby rallied the troops and defended stoutly to earn the win and give the Sharks a home tie in the play-off semi final against York Acorn, The Young Sharks side have had a great season making the play-offs and will be hoping to progress this Saturday at Leeds Road 2.00pm kick off.
