Sharks romp to away victory

Joe Halloran scored his first ever try for Shaw Cross Sharks Open Age team as the Sharks stomped Elland 6-60.

a potentially serious neck injury to an Elland player early in the second half marred proceedings and caused a delay of over thirty minutes but the Sharks did not lose their rhythm when the game restarted.

For Shaw Cross they have re-established their high powered attack having scored 140 points in their last three games while tightening up in defence - only conceding 12 points.

Shaw Cross scored 32 points in the first half with scores from Dickie Piper, Adam Masson, Sam Ottewell as well as captain Andrew Fawkes scoring an eight point try and John Rourke's quick instincts saw him go over the whitewash untouched for a score.

Shaw Cross used their athleticism to their advantage against the bigger home side and it proved to be working as Elland tired as the half went on. Halloran, Jack Gledhill and Ottewell using their lightening speed to cause the opposition problems.

Jordan Anderson took a sickening blow to his head right at the end of the half and had to be treated through half time but managed to play on in the second half.

After the break the Sharks picked up where they left off with Robbie Byatt breaking through the leggy Elland line and sprinting in for the score with the second period barely three minutes old.

Seven minutes later Elland had an injury scare on their hands as their second rower flew in for a tackle only to miss, hit his own team mate then land awkwardly on the turf causing a neck injury.

The game would be stopped for over thirty minutes whilst physio Rob Stephenson tended to the injured player and awaited the arrival of an ambulance.

Brett Turner was keen for his side not to lose any edge upon the restart and his team duly obliged with Halloran collecting a pass from Gledhill and then the 17-year-old found an extra gear to fly down the near sideline for a 60 meter try.

Gledhill would later get on the score sheet himself to bring the sharks to the 50 point mark for the second time in as many weeks before Elland managed to pull a try back themselves.

Tom Rogers got the final score of the game as he powered his way through the line and went clear to score after a 30 meter run.

Casey Johnson was on kicking duty for the Sharks today in the absence of Danny Flowers and missed only once out of his ten attempts.

Halloran said he was lost for words after the game. "I'm really excited to be honest. To have scored my first try for the first team is brilliant. I should have gone one a couple of weeks ago but happy it's come now." he said. "The way the boys played today and have done recently I'm speechless because we've been so good."

Turner paid homage to his side's defending which he felt has been key to their superb attacking play. "Everything we did came off for us, we were absolutely excellent.
"Maybe after the restart we switched off a little bit, I couldn't see them scoring." He said "Our defence has been key to our attack. It laid the platform for us it's been out of this world. The communication has been first class you can hear every word the lads are saying to each other and it's great to watch"

The result sees the Sharks jump into fifth spot in the NCL Division One and firmly back in playoff contention.
