Sharks rescue a point at the death

Shaw Cross Sharks had to rescue a point just five minutes from time as they came from behind to draw 16-16 at Shark Park against Skirlaugh.

Ryan Chalkley scored a try just five minutes from full time and the returning Danny Flowers kicked the goal to draw it level.

The Sharks trailed at half time 10-12 in a very even opening half which saw Harry Gotts go over the whitewash for the visitors to open the scoring. The home side responded with scores from Adam Masson and Chalkley to put them ahead after half an hour but then the visitors struck back with their leading try scorer Carl Puckering going over and then adding a successful kick to just see Skirlaugh edge the first half.

The Sharks saw a lot of the ball and often had chances in the red zone but could not find their way over the goal line.

The second half saw both sides trade several errors with the becoming bogged down with scrums and penalties. However just as Shaw Cross started to find their feet the visitors scored again to put some daylight between the sides. Puckering missed the kick and the Sharks needed a try and successful conversion to draw level.

The home side huffed and puffed but the Skirlaugh defence stood strong under overwhelming Shaw Cross pressure.

The Sharks had seven whole sets in the Skirlaugh red zone. However they were made to work for their final points when Chalkley was quickest to react to a loose ball from Greg Wilby and tumbled over the line to bring the Sharks within two points. Flowers converted the kick to bring the Sharks level with just five minutes to play.

For the final five minutes it was one way traffic. Shaw Cross had all the possession and even two more trips to the Skirlaugh final third. Flowers had a drop goal blocked and Jack Gledhill couldn't bring in a pass from Robbie Byatt in the far corner.

The Sharks well worth their point but Zac Parkinson felt that it was a point dropped rather than won. "I think we've got two or three gears extra to give. I think today wasn't good enough and we've dropped points there. We wasn't clinical enough when we got into their final third."

For the Sharks they earn their first point in three games and Parkinson admitted that it was nice to just stop the rot. "It's certainly nice to get something from the game. It's a win in that sense but I think we could have definitely got two points out there today."

Shaw Cross welcome York Acorn to Shark Park next and will be out for revenge after losing out in a high scoring encounter in April.
