Past Players - Past Players 1
DARREN BRISTOW – GOALKEEPER – Age 23. One of this seasons outstanding players who has come through the ranks of the club. Nickname ‘Chopper’ or ‘Whirlie Bird’
DEFENDERS:
IAN HOLMES –Age 26. *Plucked* out of Sunday football and *stuffed* into Saturday to establish himself as a regular. Nick name *Turkey*
BOB SHARPE – Age 31. Free scoring full back with a sweet left foot. Our free kick expert. Was selected for National Army X1. (Do you mean to say that Bob was a squaddie? If he was he should have a sweet left right left right left right....)
NICK SMITH – Age 26 Very consistant and reliable (he turns up) player who has been called to play in a number of positions over the years.
STEVE KNOWLES – Age 27 This is Steve’s second spell with the club since joining in 1985 from Chobham. This season’s captain who has had a very consistant season (Consistently good?)
GRAEME BUTLER – Age 29- Another product of Sunday football. Previously played for Queens United in the Woking & District League, realised the connotation of the name and left.
RAYMOND PENFOLD – Age 28 Ex Chelsea youth player, but on the plus side was with Ripley Village. Reclaimed his place in the 1st team with some outstanding displays. (Case comes up next week)
MIDFIELD:
ROB TAYLOR – Age 21. A former Surrey County Youth player, strong in the tackle (wedding?) and also very skilful
DARRELL SPRING – Age 25 Another ‘Sheers’ stalwart but only 25. Hard working and skilful player who has progressed from the youth team. Nick name ‘Roll’
STEVE McNULTY – Age 25 After 3 years in the reserves proved himself in the preseason friendlies to gain a first team place. The first teams engine room. Nickname ‘Stoker’
JIM CAREY – Age 31 Played at Sheerwater over a period of 17 years. His services over the seasons would have been of benefit to any club. (Mechanic for team bus?) We’re glad he chose us.
DARRELL REGAN – Age 24. Played most of this seasons football in the reserves. Broken through into the 1st X1 to become a valuable member of the squad. Offers invited.
FORWARDS:
MARC REID – Age 24. Has played in defence and midfield over the years but prefers to attack. Was ‘on the books’ with Ayr United. (Probably as their accountant)
KEITH WILLIAMS – Age 28. Long serving Sheerwater player. Very skilful and most inventive player we have. Formally with Spurs, Southampton and Westfield. (Invented? I don’t think so, he’d have named better clubs like Brighton, Scunthorpe and Woking Park!)
DAVE TURNER – Age 22. Sheerwaters top goalscorer at the club this year with 25 goals. Also likes to play in goal when needed! (If this tendency towards lunacy continues he’ll probably take up refereeing soon)
ON STAND BY:
NICK JONES – Age 30. The Club reserve team goalkeeper who joined us four years ago after being spotted in Sheerwater ‘sixes’
PAUL HENNESSY – Age 17. The latest addition to the family of footballing Hennessys’. Paul joined us 2 years ago and has progressed from the 3rd team to knocking on the 1st team door. (Take the thespian’s advice & keep banging away Paul).
CLUB OFFICALS
Trevor Wenden – Club Secretary
Trevor has been a loyal servant with the club from playing in the 70’s, then behind the scenes as a club official. A well liked and respected figure by all at Sheerwater.
(Have I met this guy yet?)
TEAM MANAGERS
John Comer. John played his football with Woking and Westfield until bad injury to his knee forced him to retire. He joined Sheerwater in 1987 to manage the reserves and became first team manage in 1989. John has been Sheerwaters most successful manager of recent years. An unassuming, quiet and mild mannered man who is a firm believer that advice should only be given when asked for. When last here in a final John was a fully paid up member of SCFA but rumour has it that his subscription has been allowed to lapse for the time being.
Doug Mulcahy Former goalkeeper with the club since joining us in 1984. Forced like John to retire due to a knee injury. The comparisons don’t stop him either, Doug can barely be heard on the touchline whispering words of encouragement to players and officials alike.
Doug Warwick – Club Linesman. Former player with the club who also served Queens United and Ripley. Now helping out the club with one of the jobs no one wants to do. At least the referee gets £12; all the club linesman gets is advice on where to store the flag – and that’s usually from his own mates!
