Sheffield RUFC U12s tour to Norwich, April 13-15, 2012

We set off on Friday half an hour late, the coach packed to the gunnels with bags, provisions and excited children. We got to Norwich at 7pm, thanks to a diversion, rest break and a game of touch rugby on a village green somewhere in deepest Lincolnshire.

The lads enjoyed some great bonding time and out door pursuits on the Saturday, with some high flying achievements by the back, and the forwards making a splash. The dads waxed lyrical in the evening.

On the Sunday we went to the Norwich Festival, and left with the plate.

Coaches comments:

Malcolm Heslop:

A great tour fantastically well organised by Kai and Andy enabled the players to really enjoy themselves on the activity day and at the rugby festival.

Highlights would be watching the crate stacking activity - Alfie and JJ getting to 18 crates high supported and cheered on by the whole of the backs - the big grins of everyone's faces as they came down the zip wire, and the forwards’ tactics at raft building - one wet, all wet!!!

A great effort  in the tournament with everyone giving their best when on the pitch and the determination to come away from the third place play off with some reward really made the difference. In one of the games a couple of fluent tries showed how they can play with quick ball been won and it then being fed down the line to score in the corner.

Many thanks to Norwich for hosting us, to the activity leaders for their patience with the players and to everyone who mucked in cooking, cleaning, supervising, etc

Dave Ingall:

The purpose of going on tour is to cement each others' friendship and that is exactly what this tour has done.

Thanks to Andy and Kai for organising, and Malcolm and his company for paying for the bus.
The other highlights were the Lambeth Walk performed by Dags whilst accompanied by Andy Peckett on percussion and Andy Hall on strings.

Norwich festival report

Pool stage:
Southwold 7-0 Sheffield
Swaffham 0-21 Sheffield (Tries: Sam V 2, Chris. Conversions: Chris 3)
Norwich 0-47 Sheffield (Tries: Charlie, Finn, Spencer, Chris 2, Jude. Conversions: Chris 6)

Plate final
Ely 0-14 Sheffield (Tries: Spencer, Jake. Conversions: Chris 2)

The first game, against Southwold, was the usual story for Sheffield - a poor start against a team we could have beaten if we had fire in our bellies.

Sam V and Alfie put together some good passing and looping movements, Callum, Will and Peckett got stuck in at the rucks, good tactical kicking from Chris,

But Southwold ran in a single try down the blind side to claim victory.

It was a different story against Swaffham, as the Sheffield spirit started to kindle. The lads ran in three tries, all converted by Chris.

Sam V scored the first try just after kick off, Finn supplying a great pass, the forwards getting straight in to win a ruck, and Sam running in to score.

The second try came in the second phase after the restart, with a lovely passing move. Charlie took the catch, and as usual beat lots of tackles. He passed to Finn, to Harry who beat two but was then tackled, ruck set, Spencer sidestepped, passed to Chris and on to Sam V who scored his second. Sam H was quick following the ball at scrum half, Dan and Bruce put together some good passes and made some good tackles, Callum worked well at the lineout, Alfie came close down the wing, Jude, Reece and the pack put in some good scrum shoves, Sam H made some attacking runs and good passes, Dan forced Swaffham into touch, Sam V drew and passed before Chris scored the last, going blind after a scrum.

In the final pool game, Norwich felt the true strength of Sheffield, when the lads running in six tries, Chris converting five with the crossbar denying him a clean sweep.

Charlie scored the first from a ruck, picking and going to score, shortly after Peckett had tried the same. Tom S received the kick off and made good ground before Spencer ran off the with ball, stopping on the line to pass to Finn, who had yet to score for Sheffield this season. A great act of unselfish team play by Spencer, and great support by Finn to be there. From a lineout won against the head by Ben, Jude passed down the line, and Spencer jinked his way over to score. Then Ben loped over the line. Bruce set a ruck, Sam H passed out to Chris who cut inside to score. The next came when Peckett offloaded to Jude after a series of charges and passes that kept the ball alive. Curtis to took the restart, the pack did some beautiful passing out to Chris, who ran three quarters the length of the field to score.

Those wins put Sheffield through to the plate final against Ely. The game was never in doubt, and Sheffield scored two tries with Chris again making a clean sweep of the conversions.

Spencer opened the scoring after only one minute. From a Sheffield line out Charlie tidied up a loose pass in the centres, the pack drove over to win the ruck, Spencer picked up and sprinted for the line, cutting in nicely past the full back to score. Chris converted, 0-7.

Curtis and Sam V brought down the sprinting Ely fullback to stop a counter attack, great clear out by Sam V in a crucial ruck

Harry made it over the line put a foot in touch denied him the points.

Jake scored from a rolling maul after Ben caught an Ely ball carrier. Chris converted to make the final score 0-14 to Sheffield.

A special mention has to go to JJ, Kyle and Tom S, who turned out for opposition sides in the first game.

JJ took the field for Norwich and had a great game - at one stage putting in three very good tackles in a row. He was on the wing opposite his Sheffield team mates Kyle and Tom, who took the field for Swaffham. They both put in stand out performances - and were asked by the Swaffham coach to play in every game. The lads agreed, and with every game proved that the Sheffield team has talent to out core.

It was those stand-out performances and willingness to help out the other teams that earned Kyle and Tom S the joint player of the tournament award.
