Sheffield came to this match with much optimism. Gareth Burns returned to the team at number 8 and Gareth Morley returned at inside centre. However, the squad was to continue without Tom Womack, Jonny France, Dale Hobson, Ryan Seabright and Fergus Wood.

However, Sheffield made a good start to the match and were soon on the attack in Chester's 22 metre zone, assisted by a number of penalties given away by Chester for not releasing in the tackle and kicking the ball out of the ruck. Sheffield briefly camped on Chester's 5 metre line before scrum half Steve Depledge dummied the defence and broke on his own from the base of a ruck to score just to the right of the posts. Depledge converted his own try and Sheffield led by 7 points to nil after 8 minutes. It was soon apparent however, that much of Chester game was to apply pressure through shear physicality, both in attack and defence and Sheffield were consistently rocked back in the contact areas, leading to a number of lost balls, through not only knock-ons, but stripping in the tackle, which was attempted at every tackle. With 13 minutes gone, Sheffield were caught off side at the breakdown and Chester's fly half, Liam McGovern made no mistake with the kick at goal, reducing the lead to 7 points to 3. Sheffield created a number of opportunities, but were, for a number of reasons, unable to convert any of them into points and with 25 minutes gone, Chester managed to open up the Sheffield defence down the right, with blindside flanker, Josh Woods being the recipient of the pass to score wide out on the right. McGovern failed with the conversion, but Chester had the lead at 8 points to 7. The just 2 minutes later, Sheffield had been pushed back to their 22 and were then adjudged to have been off side at the breakdown again. McGovern converted the opportunity in front of the posts, and the lead was out to 11 points to 7. The remainder of the half saw neither side to add to their scores or take control of the proceedings and the half finished with Chester leading by 4 points at 11 points to 7.

The second half saw both sides create opportunities sand both will feel they could have scored far more times than they did, but the defences held sway and the majority of the chances went astray. Chester however, got the rub of the green with the referee's penalty decisions, and with 51 minutes gone Chester had their third chance to score a penalty which McGovern converted again to increase the gap to 7 points at 14 points to 7. However, Sheffield kept up their endeavours and were rewarded after 60 minutes when with Sheffield pushing hard just outside Chester's 22 metre, fly half Andy Hodgson rode through one tackle to break free, before throwing an outrageous dummy and rode another tackle to go in under the Chester posts. Steve Depledge added the conversion and Sheffield were back on even terms at 14 points all.

However, as the match wore on Sheffield looked to have tired under the shear physical presence of the opposition and again Chester were awarded a penalty, this time for a high tackle, and again McGovern converted to move Chester into the lead at 17 points to 14 after 67 minutes. Chester were now on top and Sheffield were wilting under the pressure, but continued to hold the line, but as the clock ticked away, a number of penalties crept into the defence of the line and Chester continued to squeeze the life out of Sheffield's resolve. with time up Sheffield gave away a penalty on their try line, Chester decided to take the scrum and apply the pressure further and when they broke from the back of the scrum, replacement wing James Robins went over in the corner to move the led out to 8 points. Liam McGovern added a very difficult conversion and referee, Claire Hodnett decided we could all go to the bar and Chester had won a very hard fought contest by 24 points to 14, leaving Sheffield with not even a consolation bonus point.
