Following the disappointment of coming away from Stourbridge last week with nothing, Sheffield faced another challenge against Sale FC who sat in second place in the league before this match. Sheffield put in a very good performance at sale in September and were only undone in a fifteen minute period in the second half. In the defeat at Stourbridge both number 8 Gareth Burns and prop Tommy Marples suffered a late injuries and miss the game today. Also missing is back row forward, Thulani Kuyumani, who has made himself unavailable for personal reasons. Sam Whitworth drops to the bench with Sam Graham taking over the hooking duties. Andy Hodgson keeps his place in the centre and we saw the return of flanker Tom Womack, missing since being injured in the Sale match on the 23rd September. Jamie Pearson also returned to the squad on the bench and Joe Cooke also came back into the squad for Tommy Marples. We also continue to be without the long term unavailable personnel of Jonny France, Ryan Seabright and Ianto Jones.

Sheffield made a very good opening in the match and in the early encounters looked the stronger side and were soon in a strong position resulting in Sheffield having a 5 metre attacking scrum after 7 minutes. Sheffield had to this point dominated the scrum, but managed to loose the ball in this one and saw Sale break out, turning defence into attack and taking play right up to Sheffield's 5 metre line. Sheffield managed to turn the ball back over, but in the act of clearing their lines the kick was charged down and Sale's second row, Jake Barron was quickest to react, scoring the first try on 9 minutes out on the right. Chris Johnson failed with the conversion, but Sale had the lead at 5 points to nil. Sheffield, as they say, "got back on the bike" and kept up the pressure, dominating much of the exchanges, but as each appeared to present the opportunity to get a score, we saw Sheffield coming up with the error that would give the advantage back to Sale. The with the first half moving toward its fourth quarter, Sheffield turned over the ball from a Sale attack and cleared to Sale's 10 metre line. Sale secured the ball and spun the ball out through their backs. A smart switch move saw left wing Aaron Reed speed over for the second try on 28 minutes. On this occasion Chris Johnson made no mistake with the conversion and Sale's lead was 12 points to nil. The Genie was now out of the box and when Sheffield coughed up the ball on the half way line Sale took full advantage were soon back on he attack, with their back row forward, Adam Aigbokhae, scoring just to the right of the posts. Chris Johnson added the conversion and the lead was out to 19 points to nil after 32 minutes. Sheffield did manage to mount a further attack before half time , but Sale's defence held firm and the half ended without further score to either side.

Early in the second half, Sheffield looked to have opened Sale's defence when Ben Whitney intercepted on Sale's 22 metre, but some over exuberance saw Sheffield force too hard and the ball was turned over with an interception in the opposite direction and Sale made good headway up field. However, a penalty in Sheffield favour defused the attack and Sheffield cleared back to half way. Sheffield again made good headway into the Sale half, but when the ball was turned over again to Sale their left wing, Aaron Reed made another significant break, taking play close to Sheffield line. Sale's forwards caught up and drove for the line with prop forward, Dan Birchall scoring the 4th try for Sale after 45 minutes. Chris Johnson added the conversion and Sale had a 26 point to nil lead and a bonus point. Sheffield dug in again, but the errors kept coming to give the advantage back to Sale, and with 55 minutes gone, the fifth try came through the replacement front row, Simon Griffiths. Chris Johnson did the honours with the convesion and the lead now stood at 33 points to nil.

Again Sheffield "got back on the bike", but the errors kept preventing them making any real headway. However after a number of sorties into enemy territory and from a line out after another penalty, they found a way through the defence foe captain Dom Parsons to score out on the left after 64 minutes. Steve Depledge's conversion hit he upright and unfortunately back out, but lead was now a mere 33 points to 5. Unfortunately Sale came back again with try on 71 minutes, for Jake Barron, his 2nd after a break again, by wing Aaron Reed. Chris Johnson added the conversion to take the lead to 40 points to 5. Sheffield responded immediately with replacement Gareth Morley carving his way through the Sale midfield before passing to centre Frankie Robson to score just to the right of the posts on 74 minutes. Steve Depledge tried to drop kick the conversion and missed, leaving the score at 40 points to 10. Sheffield continued to press and were pushing hard to try and score again, despite the fact that both 4 tries and a loss by 7 points and less were out of sight. However, Sheffield continued to press and attack, but in the process of so doing allowed Aaron Reed to intercept just inside the Sale22. He then showed a clean pair of heels to everyone and scored a 7th try for Sale. Chris Johnson added the conversion and the match ended with Sale wining by 47 points to 10.
