Round four saw Sheffield travel to Derby RFC, who had only one win from their first three matches, at home to Sandbach, with losses away to Nuneaton and Scunthorpe. Sheffield were to travel without the services of back row forward Tom Womack, with Ianto Jones moving from hooker to the number six spot and Michael Bradford moving up off the bench to start at hooker. Tommy Marples dropped out with Joe Cooke returning on the bench. The bench was completed with backrow Joe Carrington and the welcome return of Rob Conville after two years down under.
Sheffield kicked off in wet, dreary and blustery conditions and Derby returned the kick to touch for a line out on Derby’s 10 metre line. Sheffield secured the line out, but as the ball was passed along the back line, Derby were able to intervene and intercept. Luckily, they then knocked on to give possession back to Sheffield. From the scrum, Sheffield broke left and moments later, Lewis Bowman went over for the first try. Steve Depledge pushed his kick to the right, but Sheffield led by 5 points to nil after just 3 minutes. Sheffield may have taken this a sign that Derby may just role over and capitulate, but this was to be far from the truth. Derby kicked off at the restart, Sheffield returned the kick and Derby ran the ball back and immediately found a hole in Sheffield defence to score under the posts. George Castledine added the conversion and the lead went to Derby, by 7 points to 5 after five minutes.
Sheffield recovered however Just a few minutes later. Sheffield mounted an attack down the right, scrum half Steve Depledge broke to tge blind side and chipped over the defence. Rupert Broadley caught the kick, side stepped the defence and went in under the posts for Sheffield’s second try. Steve Depledge added the conversion and Sheffield led again, by 12 points to 7 after just eight minutes. Sheffield should probably have scored again on 15 minutes when Steve Depledge broke through the initial line of defence. Seeing the defence up flat, he chipped over the top again, but his kick went agonisingly over the dead ball line, beating his chase by inches. Sheffield’s scrum was much in the ascendancy and Derby were penalised on a number of occasions. However, the kicks to touch for lineouts in Derby territory were being lost as second row forward Dave Clayden appeared to be struggling with an injury to his arm and numerous attacking options went begging. Derby had also managed to improve their defence, which kept Sheffield very much at bay. Then just as the half was to close, Derby found a hole when their prop forced a gap in the defence and made a smart pass to their centre, who took a great line leading to a second try out on the right. Castledine could not convert, but the whistle went for half time with the score at 12 points all.
The second half however, saw Sheffield struggling in a number of areas. The lineout would just not function, the kicking out of hand deteriorated and Sheffield were suddenly, in the opinion of the referee, giving penalties away at the breakdowns. Derby took the view that the forwards could play keep ball and extract penalties from the referee, resulting in a score to the home side on forty-eight minutes with a score wide out on the right, to take the lead at 17 points to 12. From the restart, Sheffield secured a penalty just outside Derby’s 22. They elected to go to touch again and with a lineout just outside the Derby 5-metre managed to secure the possession, but Derby managed to drive the Sheffield maul in to touch and the opportunity was lost.
Then with the third quarter coming to an end, Derby stole Sheffield ball in the tackle and realising Sheffield were very much in attack mode, there was no one at home. They kicked deep and fly half Will Hodgson scrambled back to try to secure the ball. He was tackled in possession and was deemed to have hung on in the tackle for too long. Derby had a penalty in front of the post and Will Hodgson was on his way to the sin bin for ten minutes. Derby, now supremely confident of their pack’s ability in the maul did not kick for goal, but went for the try, which they scored moments later. Castledine converted and Derby led by 24 points to 12 after 60 minutes. Derby were soon back for more, and once more the pack delivered. They secured a 5-metre scrum and although Sheffield virtually drove them off the ball, the referee could see nothing wrong with their scrum and they were allowed to form another maul from which they drove at the Sheffield line to secure a fifth try, wide out on the right. Castledine’s kick was superb and the lead was out to 31 points to 12 after 68 minutes. The final act came as the half closed with a Derby forward scampering free from the Sheffield defence to score out in the right corner again. Castledine added another superb conversion and the referee put us all out of our misery by calling time, with Derby home and dry with a 38 point to 12 win.
We look forward to the visit of Doncaster Phoenix to Abbeydale Park next Saturday, hoping that the boys will bounce back from this defeat and continue their 100% home record this season.
