Sheffield U18 Colts Win In Testing Encounter
Sheffield Overcome a Stubborn Huddersfield Side
It was grey but mild and with the spectacular backdrop of the Lockwood Park Viaduct Sheffield and Huddersfield U18 Colts locked horns in their group B league match.
The game started off with Sheffield on the front foot but with handling errors and penalties Sheffield fluffed their lines at crucial moments. This has been creeping into the game over the last few weeks and with the national cup and Yorkshire cup semi finals coming up Sheffield will have to up their game somewhat to progress.
As it was Huddersfield broke the deadlock with a breakaway try - although assisted by two missed tackles - as their centre managed to wriggle clear and surge towards the Sheffield line. At this point Sheffield, although mainly in the Huddersfield half, had not quite woken up and perhaps one or two had partaken in teenage leisure pursuits the evening before and were a smidgen lethargic....
That seemed to wake Sheffield from their slumbers and parity was restored 5 minutes later with Louis Gilder pushing over for a trademark try from the scrum. Followed 5 minutes later by a nice move to set Ben White on his way to a try and conversion HT 5-12.
The second half, apart from a couple of Huddersfield attacks was mainly played in the home sides half, but again those unforced errors kept on creeping in - but a neat hop and a skip from Kai Ramratten got the scoring underway followed 5 minutes later by a well worked Harry Greaves try. Sadly Nat Walters was just about to grab some well deserved glory when he was tackled just short of the line and suffered a fracture that has probably ended his season - we wish him well in his recovery.
Ben White rounded off the scoring with a neat try and conversion - but Sheffield only have themselves to blame for not gaining a larger score.
With the league wrapped up and Rotherham struggling to field a team it looks like next stop will be Melbourne in the national cup - and judging by their last result they will be up for it.
