Mid-Season Report

Round up of the season so far.

The first half of the 2011/12 season has largely been a successful one for Sheffield Medicals RUFC.
The first team lie in second place in Yorkshire 3, with a game in hand. With fourteen league fixtures played we have lost only two matches - both on the road – against Bramley Phoenix and Rotherham Phoenix. The latter loss also put an end to our Yorkshire Silver Trophy hopes, knocking us out of the competition at the second round stage.

Thus far, the second team has had a challenging season. Playing in a new and tougher Yorkshire Merit League, the second team has endured a mixture of results. Six fixtures have been played by the second team in this competition. The matches have often been close affairs, with Sheffield Medicals coming up on top in three of these fixtures. Additionally the second team have had a tough time in NAMS, losing to Manchester Medics 7-8 in a double header and to Leeds Medics both home and away. The highlight of the second team’s season was travelling away to Liverpool Medics; winning 45-0. A great result for the team and the club.

Like the seconds, the third team have entered a stronger Merit Table this season. The team has played four fixtures, winning two. The team has also assisted the second team in their Merit League when NAMS duties coincide. Having played both of the fixtures against Sheffield 3, the improvement in the team performance has been encouraging, despite losing both matches. Perhaps the highlight of the season so far was the Away Day fixture at a new club - playing Roundhegians 3. By all accounts the day was a success. Winning the exciting fixture 31-27 topped the day off nicely. Excitement is already building for a ground-breaking second Away Day in March, hopefully returning to North Hykeham if NAMS does not prevent it.

In conclusion, the first half of the season has been successful with the club looking up for next term. Hopefully we can continue the good form ensuring we get promoted from Yorkshire 3, progress far in NAMS and compete well in the South Yorkshire Merit Leagues.
