Sheffield Medicals RUFC

On arriving at the ground ridiculously early, in typical Medics style, the 3’s team hit the bar pre warm up. The team was in high spirit and despite of only having 16 players the feeling in the camp was almost as together and confident as if Stuart Lancaster himself was at the helm. Special mention here goes to Dave as he had to run over to the nearby home of Shef Wednesday to buy socks.
As the Oaks team emerged from the changing room it was evident that the Medics pack would be against it, especially given our largest player was playing in the centres, however an industrious first 20 minutes of tackling by the Medics pack and some darting kick returns from Rufus “Ben Foden” Gould ensured that the scores were kept even.
There were some monumental hits flying in all over the place, sadly for Pinnock most of them were on him and about 5 minutes too late, and the Medics strawberry blonde playmaker was forced from the field early.
The Medics finally worked their way through stubborn Oaks defence to a try scoring position and through what can only be described as an “epic rolling maul” from the Medics, yes you are reading correctly, made their way into the Oaks 22. The move was deftly finished off by the prolific try scorer, our very own Arg off of TOWIE, Justin “Sideways” Hesketh. Special mention here to Ed Barker who was smashed but offloaded excellently in the tackle to allow the medics to carry on the move.
After a slow start to the second half, the Oaks forwards managed to move into the Medics territory and pick and drive over the line. The resulting kick was missed but somehow the ref decided he would give it anyway, levelling the scores at 7 all.
Better work from the Medics team including some trademark less than straight running from Justin allowed the medics to move into penalty range, and when some naughty Oaks players committed heinous crimes at the breakdown slowing down the Medics attack Nick “Light Breeze” Richards managed to kick the Medics into the lead. 10 – 7.
After the restart some lax defending allowed the Oaks up into the Medics 22, and it resulted in another try for the Oaks forwards. The resulting kick was missed, and this time the ref didn’t give it. 12 – 10 Oaks.
The Medics team really came out firing and after a great chase on the restart the pressured Oaks team spilled the ball and this allowed the Medics to really pressure the other Sheffield team, and after some great work by the forwards, with more great work catching and driving a lineout beautifully, the space was left out wide for the player, who was alright but wasn’t quite the same as Josh Birch, to ignore his outside man and Crash over for a deserved Medics try. Nick kicked the extras and made it 17 – 12.
The whole team then really upped the intensity and the Oaks team didn’t make a line break for the rest of the game. Matt “The Scythe” Connell, Mark “Please don’t call me Kenji San” Porter and Tom “Smash” Cash all deserve a mention for some monumental hits. The game finished 17 – 12.
MOTM – Rich Murray
