Lions grandson joins Shelford...

Dick Matthews, Shelford RFC Director of Rugby, has announced five new signings ahead of the 2016/17 season.

Rhodri Dawes and Simon Hrbeck will be joining the Club, whilst Gerhard Wessels, Chris Cutts and Ollie Walker will be returning to Shelford.

Rhodri Dawes, grandson of former British Lions captain John Dawes, is a 23-year old fly-half who will be joining Shelford from Hertford RFC. Rhodri previously played for Glamorgan Wanderers and Welsh Exiles.

Simon Hrbeck is a wing and full-back joining Shelford from Letchworth RUFC. Simon has played representative rugby for Hertforshire U20s and U23s but most recently scored 15 points for Eastern Counties in their victory over Yorkshire in the County Championship.

Gerhard Wessels is returning to Shelford after helping Cambridge win promotion last season. Gerhard is an experienced centre who has been a regular in the Army 1st XV for a number of seasons.

Chris Cutts is a tight head prop who will be returning to Shelford after a season with Peterborough Lions. The 30-year old Rotherham born prop has also played for Leeds Academy, Hartpury College and
Cambridge.

Ollie Walker is a 20-year old open-side flanker who learned to play his rugby in the Shelford Youth setup before spending time with Melbourne Rebels U-20s and more recently with Cambridge. He played for Northampton Saints at U18 level and has also played representative rugby for East Midlands U18s, Midlands U18s and Eastern Counties.

Ollie said:
“I’ve had a frustrating few seasons with some serious injuries but now I’m looking forward to getting back to Shelford where I learned to play rugby. At the moment I want to get some enjoyment back in my rugby and I know that will happen at Shelford.”

Dick Matthews said:
“It’s great to have so many exciting players joining or coming back to Shelford. To be successful at this level clubs need to have considerable strength in depth and there needs to be competition for places. These players will undoubtedly add much to the Shelford squad.”
