The senior coaching team for Shelford RFC has been confirmed for the 2016/17 season.

Dick Matthews will be returning to Shelford RFC as Director of Rugby and will be supported in coaching the 1st XV by Gareth Evans (Head Coach/Forwards Coach) and Will Lawson (Backs Coach). Tony Begovich will be leading the Strength and Conditioning Team and Sam Tovo will be taking responsibility for player recruitment. Shelford Nomads (2nd XV) will be coached by Rory
Finlayson, Gareth Streeter and Andy Claypole.

Dick Matthews will be returning to Shelford RFC after two seasons away and will be able to draw on a huge amount of knowledge and experience, including a spell with Cambridge University. Dick
was Head Coach at Shelford RFC when they achieved their highest finish in National League 2 in the 2012/13 season.

Gareth Evans will be the Head Coach and will coach the forwards. Gareth will bring continuity to the coaching team having been involved in coaching the 1st XV for the past four seasons. Gareth
has just completed four seasons as an Assistant Coach with the Army Senior XV, including reaching the final of the Defence Force World Cup.

Gareth Evans said: “I am thoroughly looking forward to working with Dick again and I’m also excited about working with Will who will bring fresh ideas to the coaching set up. Having finished my involvement with the Army Senior XV, I’m looking forward to taking the reins and feel honoured and privileged to be given the opportunity.”

Will Lawson has played for Shelford RFC for the past two seasons and will combine playing and coaching commitments for the coming season.

Rory Finlayson will bring a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the development of players through the Nomads. Rory will also work with the Colt’s players and coaches to ensure a clear line of progression for youth players into senior rugby. Rory will be supported in coaching the Nomads by Gareth Streeter and Andy Claypole.

Sam Tovo returns to the Club after a season away. Sam has a long history with the Club as a player and former Head Coach, playing a leading role in the Club’s promotion through the leagues. Sam will be responsible for recruiting players to the Club and in adding much needed depth to the senior playing squad.1

Club President Colin Astin said: “It’s great to have Dick back at the Club and working with Gareth and the other coaches for the coming
season. Dick has a huge amount of experience and proved his value to the club during his last spell in charge. We look forward to working with Dick and the other coaches in what should be an exciting season for all involved at Shelford RFC.”

Dick and the new coaching team have already taken responsibility for the senior playing squad ahead of the 2016/17 season.
