Colts progress to the next round of the EC Cup
North Walsham 0 - Shelford 67
The last pool match in the Eastern Counties Cup for Shelford and a clear need for a result: Win and everything is in our hands; lose and other results have to go our way. Shelford got the win, and a big one at that, but the boys may not look back so fondly on a match they perhaps could have won by an even bigger margin, and one where they allowed the ref to play too big a part in proceedings.
North Walsham is a long way to go, there might be teams in Eastern Counties that are further, but we’ve never had to play them! Despite the long journey, and as the score line suggests, Shelford dominated most of the match. Their difficulties came from some very good North Walsham tackling, and some often difficult to follow instructions at the breakdown. Shelford scored 7 first half tries through Nick Budenberg, Jack Biard, Finn Priddle, Olly Copper, Olly Jury and a brace for James Groser. Jack Biard converting two. The high rate of scoring perhaps contributing to a drop in team play and a bit of individualism creeping in. But, 39 points up at half time is not to be sniffed at.
The second half turned out to be more niggly. Shelford continued their overall dominance, but they had some serious defending to do for some of the half and had to contend with a straight red for one of their players. There was only one person on the field who saw what deserved the card, but he was the man that mattered and Shelford had to play the final quarter with 14 men. The impenetrable interpretation at the break down continued and eventually frustrations boiled over, a big brawl erupted after the ball had been moved away from one ruck with a significant number of each side slugging it out. To the credit of the teams few other players rushed to join in, and the ref was left issuing a stern warning to captains and coaches when he could have sent at multiple players off. Shelford’s defence held out and they added to their first half scores with tries from Jack Biard, Jordan Barnes and another two for Olly Jury to take him to a hat trick. Conversions from Jack Biard (3) and James Gould (1) added to the total, 0 – 67 at full time.
The other matches went Shelford’s way anyway with Cambridge losing to Ipswich YM and Shelford progressing to the semis.
