Colts win at Woodford
Low on numbers, high on rugby
The Shelford colts headed over to Woodford a little short on their usual numbers due to availability, but still 19 players strong... Woodford only had 13 lads, but they fancied a proper match and so did we, so Jordan Barnes and Miguel Mierim put on the white and violet colours for the first half...
The game started with both teams settling into the game, finding their rhythm and possession exchanging hands a number of times, as both sides both got to grips with the ever changing sunny, rainy and windy weather... Our hosts broke the deadlock first with Jordan Barnes breaking tackles and setting up one of his "new" teammates for the opening try, which was converted. 7-0
Shelford then started to dominate possession, but Woodford's defence held strong with an impressive string of scramble try saving tackles. And just when it looked like the HT whistle was going to get blown, Shelford were awarded a penalty that they elected to tap and go and after a series of repeat advantages they finally elected for a scrum 15 meters out from the try line and perfectly weighted pass from Tom Sims to centre Jacob Freer saw him break several tackles to crash through under the posts, giving captain Kallum Mulhall a simple conversion to bring the HT score to 7-7.
Caleb Morris and Cammie Petullo swapped places in Woodford's team with Jordan & Miguel, and Alfie Salmon also joined them as unfortunately one of the hosts players couldn't continue due to a dead leg.
Shelford upped the gears with the likes of Zain Tariq, Jordan Barnes and Harry Quantrill making big gains in our hosts territory... and finally Shelford took the lead as flanker Phil Sarles crashed over the tryline in the left hand corner. Unconverted. 7-12
James Duffy was distributing well at flyhallf, and a link up via Jordan Barnes put through Teddy Pope, who still had much work to do... and after a lung busting run and a few would be tacklers evaded, Teddy scored near the right-hand post and Kallum added the conversion. 7-19
After Woodford's KO and a few phases, Shelford had a defensive scrum on their 22... Woodford's centre read a pass well to intercept and score to the left hand side. Not converted. 12-19
Shelford then put the scoreline out of sight with scores from Robert Armer, after James Duffy expertly drew the final defender with a delayed 2v1 pass, and then Phil Sarles who finished off another team try. FT 12-29
But the real result of the day was that 32 lads got to play a game of competitive, entertaining and compelling rugby. A big thank you to the lads who swapped jerseys and played for our hosts, and to Woodford RFC for another morning of great rugby and their post match hospitality.
