ECRU Cup Runners Up
A great day's rugby...
ECRU U16s CUP WINNERS FINALS
After the highs of winning the U16s Cambridgeshire County Cup last the week we had the daunting prospect of facing the winners of the Norfolk and Suffolk cups in a three way tournament to decide who would win the Eastern Counties (East Anglia) Cup . Hailing from Suffolk were the 2 time runners up Colchester (at U14 and U15 level) and from Norfolk was the 3 time winners Wymondham (at U13, U14 and U15 level)... however Shelford were determined to make the most of this opportunity and went about their business without fear.
Their first game against Colchester (who beat us 29-0 earlier in the season) was very close with robust tackling and rucking from both sides, a couple of chances went begging for Shelford and Colchester broke the deadlock just before the end of the first half with a try from their powerful lock who ran a hard line 5 meters out.
The second half was much closer with Shelford again unlucky not to come away with a score.
FT Shelford 0-5 Colchester
Colchester then played Wymondham in another very close match which ended 5-0 again in favour of Colchester. This result meant that Colchester had wrapped up the title, but with second place still up for grabs Shelford were determined to take something from their final match against Wymondham.
Shelford hadn't quite switched back into match mode after their break and conceded an unconverted try within the opening 5 mins, however this just spurred the peacocks into life who then replied with a try of their own just before half time through Oliver Jury, which was converted by Jack Biard. HT 7-5.
The second half was a much more open affair as the players got to grips with the wet and greasy conditions. The Shelford forwards started to dominate the exchanges and drove up the pitch, a neat interplay from the backs then set Oliver Jury into space in the middle of the park to score his second try, again converted by Jack Biard. 14-5.
Wymondham replied immediately with a converted try through their powerful center and then again with an unconverted try to take the lead 14-17. With 5 mins left Shelford were not to be undone. From the kick off winger Joe MacMullen caught the ball, almost dropped it but then recovered to speed away up to the half way line, he then passed the ball out of contact to captain Rory Webster who offloaded to center Morgan Pavlovic whose brilliant footwork helped him
to evade two then three defenders to score in the corner and secure the win for Shelford.
FT Shelford 19-17 Wymondham
Overall a great morning of competitive U16s rugby, congratulations to Colchester and as ever a big thank you to CUDRRS for organising referees for everyone week in week out.
