Oops - someone forgot the clocks went forward!
Traffic chaos too!
Result: Shelford 8 Colchester 5
Try scorer: Taylor Hein-Jones
Penalty: Osian Williams
A day best summed up in one word, Chaos! Firstly Elliot completely forgot to let me know that the clocks went forward, so we had a late start to our journey, then he forgot to inform us that the A120 was closed, so we had to follow what can only be described as 'the world worst division'
With everyone eventually arriving, all at different times, the team warmed up and were just about ready to play. The match stared at 14 a side until Theo arrived late to even up the teams. Colchester hit the ground running and took full advantage of a slow starting Shelford team with some solid attacking play
Once we had settled we started to attack as well and pushed close to the Colchester try line, unfortunately we lost the ball and the Essex team managed to clear. The home team had their best attack of the day and forced a scrum on our 5m line. A poor decision from one of the coaching team (I think it was Elliot), to send our scrum half open with no blind side wing, lead to an opportunist try from the impressive Colchester scrum half, who ran blind and went over, unopposed in the corner
Shelford hit back with plenty of attacking opportunities, one of which lead to the ball being moved wide for Taylor to fly down the wing and score in the left hand corner. Half time 5-5
With the wind at our backs, the boys had the better of the second half. Our tackling improved and our work at the break down matched their intensity. This all meant that we had plenty of good possession and try scoring opportunities plus we managed to cancelled out any of their promising opportunities
Both teams were playing a high tempo, high pressure game and gave their opponents no space or time. With plenty of mistakes by both teams, points were always going to be hard to come by. A penalty in the Colchester 22m, gave Osian the chance to give Shelford the lead, which took calmly and put us into an 8-5 lead. This was the final score dispite both teams efforts to get that all important next try. Both teams played with real heart and determination and can be proud of their efforts
Well done to everyone who made the long journey there and back. Today we kept positive despite having a horrible start to the day. Also with a number of players trying out or playing in new positions and more handling errors than we has seen for some time, we maintained enough structure and never lost our composure to put in a good performance
